Hm. If I understand you correctly, you're saying that children would not want to be told stories, without advertising? I mean, I agree people need to be aware of a good or service to buy it (and that includes food, sex, and temperature

You can't really define "damage" without reference to a moral framework, though. It is somewhat inherently a moral question.

I actually prefer to open images in new tabs. I do use the keyboard shortcuts though. If I had to use the mouse to switch I'd probably go insane too.

In all fairness, there's a reason I'm on reddit but not Facebook. "new content streams" is definitely part of it.

I'm glad the web has finally advanced to the point where we can finally load an entire page in 1-2 round trips. Sorry, I'm feeling unnecessarily snarky today.

I haven't studied economics, so forgive me a naive question: What if the "interference" with action X is introducing a new alternative at time T that person A prefers over the original? (Perhaps that's not strictly withi

Yeah. It'd be a shame if the ad-supported model stops being viable, and sites like www.gwern.net stop being able to produce quality content.

I like your journal idea. It occurs to me that I just assumed you meant a physical journal, when that wasn't in the post. I feel like that would help me a fair bit compared to a digital one (I find physical books easier to focus on. So

I think a good middle-ground would be to have more narrowly scoped behavior. Not quite implementation-defined (as I believe that requires the implementation to be consistent in its treatment?) but for instance "Integer overflow will re

That's a fair point. I mean, I try to avoid rushing onto "the new thing" just because (although I'm certainly guilty of it at times), but I guess I forget that the ratio of articles posted to HN isn't representative

I agree. If anything, owning Java is a brand improvement, based on my (admittedly limited) experience with other Oracle products. But that's just my personal opinion.

Word also doesn't generally lock up when it can't access the network, and sit there spinning though. (Although I'm sure that feature is on the road-map). I feel like a lot of the people making SPAs just haven't used a do

Funnily enough, even for GMail I use their "legacy" HTML+URLs+POST requests interface. It's honestly a breath of fresh air (although the styling is a bit dated). But it's lovely to be able to open multiple compose window

In all fairness, I thought early smartphones were pretty silly, and my opinion hasn't much changed. I also find people touting "progress" don't realise that a lot of the time they just mean "change". I mean, su

The only time I click ads is those google ads at the top of the results, when it's an ad for literally the thing I googled . Otherwise I follow a policy of "If it didn't occur to me that I want it, I don't want it."

Is that, plus an understanding of the non-in-place merge sort algorithm not enough to make a merge sort? I mean, you need to pick what basic understanding you assume in any explanation. EDIT: To be clear, I think it's an explanation of
