I have long attributed déja vu to a peculiar looping phenomenon in the mind. It's hard to describe. I don't have any real facts to base it on, just that when I experience it I often "skip down" a few more levels and revi

I would argue that in order to make great progress a nation needs great security.

I'm curious why this upvoted (on HN, not reddit). It boils down to whining to me, with a bit of insecurity, "cowardly.. take forever.. lacking in discipline" tacked on the end of the post. Maybe the work they do doesn't

I think concentrating on the language is a mistake. Once you can grok a few, perhaps at least one imperative and functional, you can learn any other in a matter of days. Sure, mastery takes much longer but in my experience most businesses h

The way you do it is by making it stick. Stop giving up. Accept the pain, learn to love it, and then you will gain. You know your gender doesn't matter for this goal. All that matters is eating healthy and moving. It doesn't matte

I didn't say anything about bans or making things illegal. I don't mind too much that there are drug addicts, speeders, sex addicts and frivolous games. I think you're letting emotion blind you since it seems you're not

I know that when I get into a "flow state" while programming I tell my spouse to have patience with the way I reason/talk for the next few hours. Best way I can describe how I feel is the Tetris effect turned up to 11. https

It is simplistic labeling, and I am generalizing from what I've seen. I agree it starts from escapism in many cases. From what I have witnessed it's escaping boredom and/or pain, two things that life has much of. It's a

Anecdotally, all of the people I know struggling with opioid addiction were potheads beforehand. I think drug addicts will abuse whatever they can, regardless of available options.

I find old laptops and VMs are better in most use cases outside of utilizing the GPIO pins. With laptops you also get all of the peripherals and a battery backup.

A NUC is overkill for PiHole. You can run it happily in a VM assigned less resources than an equivalent Pi Zero.

I'm a fan of this but I still think we're so far away from a solution. I gave up on recycling at my apartment because the bins get filled with things like toilet paper, soiled pizza boxes and dog poop. Mislabeled plastics are the

Heights don't scare me. It's the risk of falling from greater heights and being less in control of mitigating that outcome. Like others have said in the thread, trusting the gear makes most of the difference. I'm always iffy

Plain old C is pretty beginner friendly. Programming an Arduino is a good introduction (similar to C, forgive me I'm a bit ignorant here). A good systems project would be writing a simple shell.
