On the road it feels quite different driving a big truck and a small car, let alone a motorbike or a bicycle.

I agree, but find it unlikely that a change will happen top-down either, as the politicians and corporations are even more corrupted than individuals. I ride a bicycle too and don't own a car. I buy stuff second hand etc. I do fly but

Hey, me too. Sadly of late, I've felt a nihilistic indifference grow inside me. Trying to infulence people on how they should do things is socially amazingly straining. The outcome at best is usually that people agree with you, but adm

Of course you can run Android without the Google services eg. with LineageOS.

If you truly want control of your device you simply cannot buy anything that runs iOS. When Apple decides that the support for your iOS device ends, you have no choice but to upgrade, or risk running outdated vulnerable software. The laptop

You nailed it. Clumsy cases absolutely destroy the elegance of these beautiful devices. I'm not as confident about dropping them though. However the Samsung Galaxy A3 I use has proved to be very durable. Among casual drops, it has sust

There would be no science without philosophy. The scientific method _is_ philosophy. I think it's very important to retain the ability to postulate above scientifically proven things.

Thank you for the explanation. I'm curious though; what happens if someone takes over your phone number? Eg. If the operator re-assigns a prepaid number?

In Finland there are small biodegradable plastic bags available in grocery stores. Free of charge. They're mainly for vegetables, fruit etc. Downside is that they are weak enough to break if mishandled. Bigger bags to hold all your pur

The convenience of cheap disposable one-time-use containers is simply too great. The only real solution is to have this stuff made from biodegradable materials.

Yes. We didn't have each others phone numbers in our contacts. Manually adding by phone number didn't work. At this point we just gave up. I use prepaids because I travel a lot so my mobile numbers are just throwaways. I'd ra

Older iOS versions have multiple unfixed vulnerabilities. They will most likely never get fixed either. How exactly does that work for security, trustability?

In terms of absolute physical harm, yes. If you live with other people you probably need to convince them to do things differently too. In my experience this can be very stressful and I wonder if the induced stress of even worse for ones h

The point was that one person riding a bicycle will not solve environmental problems if everyone else drives a car and the infrastructure is built for cars.

For the end user it's black and white - can you run that app on your device or not? Android continues to run everything also on a 32-bit CPU and iOS does not.

Obviously it's impossible to provide such metrics since you can not run Firefox on older iPads. It does not run on Android < 4.1 either, but the devices remain useful since you can update Android even if the vendor support is long g

So you are arguing that at a scale it makes no difference to ride a bicycle since everyone else drives a car. I'm not sure what to say to this. I really don't have any answers to big societal problems.

Samsung Galaxy S3 will run LineageOS 14.1 just fine. Gapps work well also. It's even officially supported by the project. It will also run faster than stock roms since there is no vendor bloat.

If you are arguing for the environment it certainly does not make any sense that fully functional hardware becomes obsolete because of software. Android devices at least have the option for 3rd party software. No such luck with iDevices. Al

This has been mentioned a thousand times over: on Android devices one can usually install LineageOS when the vendor support runs out. No such option for iPhones. When the support runs out you will be left hanging.
