I had an interview cut short early once because the interviewer said “I have to make sure we’re allowed to hire you.” This was in Germany. Ultimately, accommodations help but they don’t place me on even ground: they still single me out and

I'm deaf and rely on real-time captions for calls. In an in-person interview scenario, I'm at a huge disadvantage and not able to perform at my best. In a video call, I'm on equal ground. It's not as simple as "requ

The thing I haven't figured out (mostly because I haven't sat down and done so) is how I'd access mail and such—without my password manager on my own phone, I don't have access to anything.

For what it’s worth, the touch surface can be disabled so that the latest remote only accepts physical presses. I discovered this after losing my mind for a month or so, and it’s made a huge difference.

I like Fathom. I've used it for years and I both like using it and like feeling that it's aligned to my own values about privacy. This announcement feels very human to me, and I'm glad that it seems both Jack and Paul came aw

In my experience, it’s awful. When using my phone for real-world captions, I still rely on Otter.ai or even a Google Meet with myself as the only participant.

I’ve long felt that “dark pattern” isn’t the right term. It obscures the intent behind purposeful decisions made by real humans, by describing a malicious action as an abstract outcome. The use of urgency here is absolutely a manipulative p

I experience exactly the same. For me it’s an “accent” caused by profound hearing loss. No issues in everyday conversation, but almost zero success with any speech to text tool.

I have profound hearing loss (sensorineural) in both ears, and I've been following gene therapy in all of its fits and starts for almost two decades. I was lucky enough to have _not horrible_ hearing at my youngest, and then lost it pr

I think you're missing some of the nuance in the article. Rote here means that on the industry level, they can feel like an established, everyday, ought-to-be-easy thing—not that they're actually easy. I'm curious, though: wh

Yep. It's an inevitable choice, but I find that in the context of design systems, we don't usually end up making that choice intentionally, and instead default to over-optimizing up front without consideration of other approaches.

I think Tailwind is phenomenal for implementing a design system on the engineering side, but it can't inherently solve many of the other reasons a design system exists: capturing and defining the patterns a specific product uses, creat

Yep! This often happens when design systems are thought of in narrow terms of design tooling—component libraries and such in apps like Figma, without a connection to the implementation. Edit—Responding to an edit in the OP: >I like worki

Agreed. I think part of the challenge is that design systems are inherently owned across design and engineering (not just the design team), but the overall understanding of what a design system is means that few folks involved really unders
