Its especially bad because of the way profile pages are organized. When you're viewing your own profile wall posts and status updates float to the top, while Likes, new friends, and other such ambient updates are further down. However, othe

Why is that better? You can use JSON here. (I say this as someone who used to use random HTML attributes.)

The jQuery metadata plugin makes elegant use of this property of class names. For example, you can do something like this: <a href="#hello" class="{name:'George'}" /> and then in jQuery you can retrieve the metadata like so: $('a').

A lot of similar material appears in both the book and in his essays posted online, but there's also some unpublished stuff in the book as well. As to the ratio, I couldn't say. But as with Hacker Monthly, I find reading a print edition to

Good book. Recommend taking advantage of this deal if you haven't yet read it, its a easy read that will get the gears turning.

Not a bug, just how HN works. Same thing happens if you make a comment. Notice the id variable in the query string, its going to be the id of the orange-starred submission. You can change it to the ID of another item on that page, and the s

I'd be curious to hear what you think of CodeIgniter, I have heard good things. We've been using CakePHP for about 3 years now, and would highly recommend it as a general purpose PHP framework.

Client side image resizing for an image uploader, part of a larger web app build. Saves a ton of time/bandwidth/CPU. So far its turned really well. Its pretty easy actually, thanks to the most recent beta of SWFUpload. If you want to implem

I remember this site, I like it. Regarding Google indexing the site, was that toungue-in-cheek? If not, you may want to consider some basic changes to the structure - I think its less that Google doesn't like your site and more that there's

This hits home. I had a high school friend drown last week, at 11:30 AM, on a crowded beach. I still don't know much about it, but the description sounded quite similar to this: Tweedy said he saw someone playing in the water. He looked ag

Good point. Another reason to do this is that jQuery and other libraries are not always backwards compatible between point releases, so you can end up with broken code in the wild without your knowledge.

Apparently the only difference between the unregistered and registered versions is a pop-up. The OP was telling Divvy that removing the pop-up was worth $5 to him, but not $14.

You don't need very much at all. Maybe a laptop computer and a couple changes of clothes. Pictures and videos of your life. That's about it. That was a huge one for me too. For years I'd thought I needed at least $50k/yr, a nice car, fanc

I believe that the guys actually had a different idea when pitching to YC and they were "redirected" onto this idea. Interesting you say that, given how well the idea matched the first RFS. [1] For better or for worse, I got the same impr

Wow, KnK! That takes me back. What a great site. As corny as AOL programming may have been, I learned so much from it, and it definitely got me hooked on writing software. Good memories.

I've been wanting to start out on my own for a while, just to generate a little extra money To be frank, that scares me. I want my webhost to live and breath hosting, not treat it as a side-project.

Great to see Patrick Gillespie is still around, I remember him from the AOL programming community (1999!), nice guy and very sharp. His API spy is still the best I've ever used: http://patorjk.com/downloads/patorjkapispy51.zip
