The obvious exploitation vector is deliberately pissing you off to make you feel guilty and lose confidence. I think my father used to be like you for the first two years or so, then he grew up :)

Haha, I think you nailed it. Windows 95 had exactly the same bug, except that the counter was unsigned so it was taking 48 days to crash. I only hope these machines aren't flying some modified W95 kernel :)

One WTF I've seen: a consumer router which failed to NAT outgoing packets if their endian-swapped destination IP matched the LAN subnet, i.e. anything sent to X.1.168.192 would be forwarded to WAN with 192.168.1.Y source IP and get los

See the first answer here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/612443/why-does-the-mac-a... I also checked similar manual for AMD and it doesn't seem to mention RSP alignment at all, except that "some call

push rbp ; <- stack alignment push This shouldn't be needed. 8 byte alignment is fine for the CPU itself. The purpose of 16 byte alignment is to facilitate making 16 byte aligned stack allocations.

The userspace/kernel interface for invoking syscalls which the OP calls with assembly code is obviously not portable. Not even between similar OSs on one architecture and absolutely not between architectures. POSIX only specifies a s

Maybe perf stat -d php ./benchmark.php would show some difference? It measures some kernel and CPU events like context switches, page faults, L1 and L3 cache misses.
