The paper says 1.5% of pairs were indeed between the same morphs. No mention of infertility, but white/white pairs produce 1/4 of chicks with both 2nd chromosomes mutated and the only male chick of this kind they found was 50% und

This ought to be true in most HP amps out there but there may be exceptions and possibly (I wonder if anybody ever investigated it?) some parasitic coupling too. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13014435#13018118

Some programs may have strings like /usr/share hardcoded in them. I once tried renaming the root user to "boss" and it unearthed few issues of exactly this kind.

ACPI? I think it's UEFI mounting the Windows partition and dropping some files there before booting the OS. ACPI executes on a virtual machine inside the kernel and afaik it's not supposed to be able to write to files.

I think what the research itself (as opposed to politics surrounding it) was about is summed up in the last paragraph: A key result in the paper by Hardt, Price, and Srebro shows that—given essentially any scoring system—it's possible

Firmware can be another issue. My parents have a washing machine with busted power transistors and MCU which drives them. The MCU could be replaced but without FW it's a brick.
