"an operating system is a collection of things that don’t fit inside a language; there shouldn’t be one" I've wondered the same thing about databases. Just like an OS, a database has to manage data on disk and figure out whe

I don't understand why this problem would be self-perpetuating. It seems to me that if the cost to ship items rises, that would incentivize investment in building more containers, deploying more ships (perhaps converting abandoned cru

Thanks! I'm curious why you think the JVM is a net loss if you don't need it, if you want to elaborate on that.

I don't follow. For context, I've been thinking about learning Clojure. I'm pretty new to the Lisp world--I went through most of SICP in Scheme years ago, but that's about it. In 2012 Clojure was HN's second favorit

Fair points, but I'm not sure how this ties in with twitter's image cropping algorithm. Not saying chest crops are ideal, but IMO twitter has other issues which are at least 100x more important that they should be focused on. If

Indeed. And reddit is one of the angriest social media sites IMO. My suspicion is that FB and Twitter are actually tuning their algorithms to dampen anger nowadays--I'm almost certain Youtube is (with terrific results). I see reddit a

I don't buy it. My intuition here is that Benford's law is a thing because for pretty much any statistical distribution, large numbers are less likely than small numbers, and small numbers are more likely to start with 1. But I&

In the long term you could develop some best practices around killing pests. I always thought something like Pabio for used mattresses would be great, so people could easily try lots of mattresses and find one which really helps them sleep.
