I feel like you could simulate those conditions here on earth pretty accurately. At the very least, it sounds like they have some radiation sensors on the rover, so we will soon have a better idea of what conditions are like.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_ship The end goal of the generation ship would be to colonize a planet in a far flung solar system. I would imagine that with the number of planets in existence, we could find one that was more hos

Another problem is that the HN crowd has been getting inundated with a ton of 'Show HN: AppName v0.001' posts for a while now. There are some obvious benefits to doing this, like getting early feedback from tech-oriented people before chas

Yup, this mission has been in the works for ~10 years so I would imagine that they chose the specific sensor at least 6-7 years ago. Also NASA is notoriously risk averse (for good reason). Apparently it is very common for them to rely on o

Although I would argue that Mars is a poor choice for a backup. It is fairly inhospitable and relatively close to earth. I think generation ships would be a better investment if this is our goal. Although Mars would be a good stepping st

uhh, the looters in the article are bankers and CEO's. The looters in Atlas Shrugged are government and people on welfare. Very different definitions.

I am not sure an investigation is needed. It just comes down to money. Netflix doesn't want to raise rates (recall the huge backlash they received that last time they did that) and probably can't afford the license costs that are being de

I could see HR throwing a fit if they ever found out that an employee used a non-approved third party service to voice an official complaint. Interesting idea, but tread lightly. A better idea would be to implement this as enterprise SAAS.

Yeah, that was my initial thought. A single play on radio in a big market could easily reach well over 32,000 people. The revenue model for streaming seems to be based on the payout systems that are used for radio. Unfortunately for arti

My best guess is that payment is based on some sort of revenue sharing agreement. So Spotify takes a portion of it's revenue for a certain time period and divides it equally among the artists based on the number of times their songs were p

There are some good and bad reasons for this. For example, the deregulation of electric utilities in California in 1996 was an epic failure. Part of that was due to the design of the deregulation scheme, but a lot of is was attributed to

Yelp is not in the personnel security business, so I don't think they really care what you think about the security policy of their building (which is most likely supplied by a third party contractor anyway, as is the case in my building, a

Although if you really think about it, what other option does yelp have. It's not like yelp is going to get the NSA to do a bunch of wiretapping, or hire sleuths to dig up the social security numbers of the irate business owners. If they

I am no expert in this area, but I believe this is a fairly good example of the issue you are describing. According to the study, it appears as if the gender system used in some languages appears to bias individuals perception of the objec

I was talking to an HR guy from a mid-tier web company who said they were pretty adverse to hiring PhD's without proven industry experience. It sounds like they were burned a couple of times by people who couldn't make the transition.

A very misleading, alarmist article. The number of layoffs year over year may be up, but that says nothing about overall employment. Also a few big rounds of layoffs from some giant firms that have been on a downward trajectory for some t
