An acquisition would have been much better for the employees. It's IMG's CEO who didn't want it as he enjoyed his independence...

The difference is they did turn down acquisition offers from Apple and Intel, a few years ago. However they're not doing so well as an independent company atm. Many of the most experienced engineers are getting poached by Apple these

But that's not the story with Sinclairs/Amstrad, who both launched bad products at some point, and never recovered from it.

The issue is that these companies were doing really well, got acquired as a result, but then mostly shrivelled to nothing. Let's hope ARM doesn't get cursed that way...

Not only is it hilarious, but it's the most likely outcome at this time. None of the alternative 'deals' we often hear proposed are grounded in any kind of reality.

Perhaps a more exact personal observation would be that hiring managers always hire the same type of person.

Agreed, but I'd put it that way: most companies I see are very interested in pretending to improve their recruitment processes. What they don't really want, is to take on people who are noticeably better than (or different in any

This has been a deepening mystery throughout my career. I see most companies are utterly uninterested in improving their recruitment processes, and are at the same time frustrated that most projects fail or don't quite deliver. Meanwhi

Anectodally, it seems to be a lot worse in the US. But why would it ? I would have thought the competition for great engineers is highest there. Humiliating them is not the best strategy...

Agree that adding more tests and interview is self defeating, but I wouldn't be so sure that there are many more candidates? It's not like the number of CS students has gone up X00%. Visas are harder to come by as well. OTOH Mozil

Is it because there is a large surplus of awesome candidates these, that companies can afford to make them jump through any number of hoops? Or are software engineers, in average, getting more arrogant these days ? (_genuine_ question I&#x
