I think most of the people like this in the ML world are extreme specialists (e.g.: bioinformaticians, statisticians, linguists, data scientists) who are "technical" in some ways but aren't really "computer people".

tl;dr: no. This commenter is just wrong. denenv.nix pretty much is flake.nix + services. It has since grown more features, but this kind of use case is exactly its niche. Devenv isn't a Nix fork and doesn't compete with Nix. Its

I have been doing this aspect manually, sometimes adding a flake.nix or using Devenv with flake.nix instead of devenv.nix. If this can work well generally, it's a really slick integration. I'm really impressed with Devenv's v

For programming, at least, there are also problems with overall output quality, instruction following, and the scopes of changes. LLMs don't do well at following style instructions, and existing memory systems aren't adequate for

It's more general than that, closer to WSL. I usually use Podman Desktop for container stuff, but I like OrbStack for managing Linux VMs. It has some really slick integrations and it performs very, very well.

Actually setting up rootless Docker is pretty manual and kludgy. With Podman, rootless is pretty much effortless.

What's not hermetic with Nix? Are you talking about running with the sandbox disabled, or and macOS quirks? It's pretty damn hard to accidentally depend on the underlying system in an unexpected way with Nix.

If you build them with Nix, you can. Just call `nix build` with a trailing `&` a bunch of times. But it's kind of cheating, because the Nix daemon actually handles per-machine scheduling and cross-machine orchestration for you. Jus
