As a one-day, one-time thing, I hardly think this is worthy of concern. With respect to the fading-in, in the blog post announcing it they said their studies showed that after users became accustomed to the change, they were using the new p

I'd guess that he feels that what the author is describing here is an example of self-control, even if it's a bit indirect.

I know that, but there already exists a syntax for strings. I thought he was implying something more.

No it wouldn't. All else aside, if this were the case every browser for the past decade would have been sued for including "Mozillla" and/or "MSIE" in their user-agent strings.

From his comment, I'd imagine he thinks that spreading lies and irrationality shouldn't qualify an entity as a charity.

He states that Python sort-of has a symbol type like Lisp, but that there isn't a syntax for it. Could someone help me understand what he's talking about?

Maybe this is just semantics, but the others browsers wouldn't be evaluating them either, since they're comments and only IE looks for the conditionals, neh?

In case anyone else is confused, this is the same story we saw a little while ago; nothing new has happened.

I agree with most of your post, but the incident with the unit conversion deserved to have a stink made about it. There are so many things that can go wrong on a mission like that, and having the point of failure being something as simple a

A problem with this idea is that the easiest ways to get around filters (secure tunnels) would generally result in the connection appearing to come from outside of the country.

I don't really think this post has much value. This item stood out as particularly pointless (see article for image): Two circulating beams bring first collisions in the LHC. "From the press release two days ago, regarding the first (CERN)

I acknowledge that everything in your post is true (save myself being wrong ;) ) and was not arguing otherwise. I know that you can mutate mutable arguments passed to functions in Python, I was just saying that it isn't actually pass-by-ref

In Python you never deal with an object itself, just a reference to it, so you can change the value of any mutable object you pass to a function, lists and dictionaries are just a couple of examples of these. The problem (discussed by the a

Lists and dictionary aren't special, and they aren't pass-by-reference in the sense referred to in the article. def foo(my_list): my_list = [ "my", "new", "list" ] Executing this function will not change the value of the list

The iTunes store is WebKit-based, which isn't exactly the same thing. A lot of what you can do easily in WebKit can't be done nearly as efficiently or easily in other browsers.
