I run an Alexa top 10K website with an ad-based revenue model. iOS content blocking has not materially impacted overall revenue because 1. Even though mobile accounts for about 50% of traffic, it only accounts for 25% of revenue anyway. 2.

RPM (revenue per 1000 pageviews) varies wildly by site, geo and platform (desktop/mobile). If you're a site with cat photos it's about $1. If you're about mortgage refinancing or roofing, it could be $15. The first pagev

Sequel Pro for MySQL is better because it's a more mature product. I've been using it for a while so there is a little familiarity bias. I have also paid for Postico (before they launched on the Mac App Store). As far as Postgres

An easy way to detect is to see if an ad div is visible and > 0px tall. Edit: Clarification: Most ad blockers collapse the divs where ads would have appeared. That's the tell I use to detect ad blockers. There are other, more sophis

I manage a consumer website with 4-5 million unique visitors a month, monetized solely via ads. About 25% of our desktop users use an ad blocker. The site's desktop audience is 56% U.S., 8% India, 7% UK, 5% Canada. When we detect the u

HTTP2 only works for HTTPS sites. For a myriad of reasons, that is not practical for a lot of websites. HTTP 1 best practices are going to be needed for a long time.

The author makes an assumption that the cause of the bad scroll was the ad at the top of the page. I have seen many pages on mobile and tablet that have broken scrolling like this, and many have nothing to do with ads. I have also seen refl

This is good stuff. There is also a SaaS offering to do this for mobile apps. It's called AppSheet [1] and they let you create iOS and Android apps from spreadsheets -- Google Sheets or Excel. Disclaimer: I don't work for them but

Repatriation is somewhat of a red herring. Money is fungible. Even if it is technically (on the books) "overseas", it can be (and usually is) invested in U.S. markets.

Perhaps not costly, but definitely cumbersome. What's more, it will have the opposite consequence. In his book "Influence", Robert Cialdini wrote that making CEO pay public had the effect of raising exec pay across the board

This article is bad journalism. I worked in that industry for about 10 years and the way this operates is the company lays off 100 workers and replaces them with 120 contractors, 90 of which are offshore and only 30 are in the U.S. These 30

That is not true. You can be on H1B and not work for a business as an employee but can own a business. Making money on ads on a blog is perfectly legal.

As bad as some of these stories are, H1-B is way better than an L1 visa. Talk about indentured servitude. With an H1-B visa, an employee can at least change jobs and find another employer to work for. All the other employer has to do is tra

One way to optimize Adsense earnings is to look at Google Analytics data (you have to link the two but that is trivial to do). For example, look at eCPM by screen resolution to see if your ad placements are working correctly on all screen s

No argument there. My post said "Typically how this is supposed to work". It doesn't mean TVTropes works like that. Their current terms of use also have no bearing on their legal right to change the licensing from CC-BY-SA to
