I rarely read the full thread on HN but read this one to see if anyone had mentioned Echo or Alexa-enabled devices. Surprising that no one did, esp given how many they have sold. We are an Apple household primarily but also have a Google Ho

What we often fail to realize -- esp. in our tech bubble -- is that science is now mistrusted by the mainstream in society.

I subscribed to Laracasts a few months ago and use it off and on as I develop a couple of web projects. I really like his style of video coaching.

I don't want to minimize the level of prejudice that you face but know that every deviation from a heterosexual cis-gendered neurotypical able-bodied white American male is a trigger for discrimination. Colored woman? 2 levels of preju

Instead of selling, if you move out and rent out your house, the rent you collect will only be taxed at a max rate of 25%. The federal income tax rate on passive income from S-corporations (which are pass through entities) maxes out at 25%.

tbrock is right. When you're an established entrenched player like Google or Facebook, paying ISPs for distribution is a small price to pay for a moat that makes it extremely difficult for new companies to come in and disrupt you. Netf

This is a condescending attitude. People vote against their interest all the time. The HN crowd is generally in the top 10% of income and they vote for Democrats who will raise their taxes.

But Apple supports iPhones for 4-5 years. Google has said they will only support their flagship Nexus and Pixel phones for no more than 2 years. For a $700 device this is unacceptable.

It's interesting to think about how this differs from Craigslist going after scrapers. Linkedin is objecting on the basis of DMCA (copyrights) and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (alleging unlawful access of their public website). >

Even when publishers have a good brand, it doesn't change user behavior. How often do users directly go to Wikipedia to look something up? Google search is integrated into Chrome, Android, Google Home. Google is a monopoly. Yes, publis

I agree. As a web publisher who depends on advertising for revenue and Google for traffic, things are getting more and more difficult. Google providing answers in the search box robs legitimate publishers of traffic. But the industry is so
