Hey breadislove; amazing article, I’ll be sending mixedbread an email in the morning that may interest you (email will be <5-characters>@pm.me) I have also been working in compression and performance engineering, and managed to get a

Benchmarks are great, but I feel like there’s a better way this seems quite subjective. What you really need is an objective benchmark

I don’t agree necessarily that if you want to make games to use an existing engine in every case. For most cases it’s good advice. But existing engines are so “general purpose” and full of assumptions about your game. Maybe your game requir

Yes. Fable is insanely capable. Probably comparable to the jump from ChatGPT 3 to ChatGPT 4 for me, maybe double?

I’m not a graphics programmer but had alot of fun building a raycaster in C. Fun math and actually really simple relatively. I’m going to revisit raycasting with a browser based raycaster from scratch. I’m just finishing up a webgl + canvas

“Amazing code”… who cares? that’s like saying a book is only worth reading if each sentence is beautiful To me I couldn’t care less as long as the overall story is coherent, and I care more about the idea density in the book. Lord of the ri

But we aren’t discussing ethics here, we are discussing technical capabilities. Who said it’s unvetted? Sure it matters

I don’t consider myself an expert, but I’ve been programming for the last 6 years, and of those 6 years I’ve spent almost all my spare time programming during this period except for a 1 year hiatus. This includes personal projects with a de

I agree. This sentiment is quite tiring and I put it down to one of 3 things: 1) lies and/or cope 2) lack of actual software ability, therefore over evaluating your own skill 3) haven’t actually used LLMs, and want to do a “look at me

I hope you can get around to shipping! I’m working on a game engine/platform and my first game on the engine. Lots of compression work so that I can fit the games into qr codes which I’m super stubborn about achieving and finally achie

Dumb question: can you train a model to predict the next byte of ANOTHER MODEL So apply this same logic to compressing a bigger model within a smaller model I know this is absolutely regarded, but humour me please

Probably not lol, it’s very specific to PvP multiplayer games, tested on my own game. But maybe I can extract the core concept to enwiki9 but I doubt it

No one knows so just embrace it :) LLM capabilities are mind-blowing. I’m not a super experienced engineer career-wise ~5 years, so take my view with a grain of salt - but I’ve done work in full-stack, systems, gaming, extensions (web and i

And just for comparison, my absolute best compression method managed to get down to 10s of KB, but the real unlock got to the ~1KB figures. Note these numbers are ALL post-compression numbers. This is not raw data vs compressed data. The ~1

You probably don’t need A*, do you actually want the AI to move optimally? That would infer the game ends sooner. You could probably just use greedy heuristics

I will be showcasing something on hackernews soon! Basically I found a way to “compress” a multiplayer game state from ~100KB+ to ~1KB But it’s only for the game I’m building and it’s not pure compression work, I had to do some tricky thing

I will post back with real numbers tonight, but naive approach did not compress well at all (KB easily). But of the “smart” approaches (pre compression): - 5 move motif over 2 bytes - best - 2 move motif - insanely small - 2 move motif with
