This isn't just for backwards compatibility, OutputDebugString is a crucial function and hasn't been replaced with anything afaik. We use it all the time. Why fix something that isn't broken I guess?

That the appreciation was 0% makes a lot of sense since the dollar pas pegged to the gold. Maybe it just means that having a currency that increases in value by 7% per year was untenable since it doesn’t incentivize people to invest in more

One difference is that the student loans in Sweden are controlled by the government and have a very low interest rate (it's 0.05% currently). It'd be foolish not taking that loan.
