They did with all previous versions of Xcode, I don't see why they'd stop now.

Xcode 4 will still be included for free with the OS, I'm willing to bet, just like previous versions were.

No, because they were distributing it as part of the operating system, which they sold.

Support for this theory can be seen in the pattern of past Xcode major releases: to date, they've been released included w/ a new version of OS X and have not run on any previous version of OS X, while minor updates have been available for

Xcode 3 was included with a $129 dollar OS and only would run on that one or later. Xcode 3.2 was included with a $29 OS and ditto.

I bet they will, just like they're shipping Facetime with Lion.

Possible theory: Cost of bandwidth for downloading 4.2GB is > .99? Honestly, I have no idea, though.

Actually, they've been including Xcode with the OS and giving away minor updates for free. History of Xcode, every new major version was released with an OS and would not run on the previous versions of Mac OS X. See also: iPod Touch until

I'm pretty sure that the only reason they're charging for it is because they feel they're obligated to by accounting requirements. Same reason they charge for Facetime. I'd wager Xcode 4 will be included for free with Lion, just like Faceti

I wouldn't really call NeXT a failure, considering OS X.

Oddly enough, HP is the one of the major vendors that most appears to be actually planning an alternative to windows. They've already said they plan on bringing WebOS to PCs.

Not really, as the Kindle doesn't support any other vendor's DRM. If you can buy a DRM-free ebook, then sure, though you may have to convert it to a different format.

The discussion here at least seems to ignore one thing: 30% will not happen because that would mean Amazon would make -no- profit and still incur expenses. The agency model under which the vast majority of Amazon's ebook sales are done has

Give it a few days, that was literally only released last night, and they're still waiting for the ad supported version to be approved. Up until then it was in open beta.

Java-style sandboxing prevents all run code from having access to anything important on the filesystem (&c) which a) wouldn't really work for a server-run application and b) wouldn't at all prevent the type of nasty that shows up in tho

And not including eval and base64_encode would be ridiculous . No programming language is at all difficult to do nasty things with if you decide it's a good idea to include random untrusted code snippets.

Oh, bugger off. Person hosting the screenshots isn't the person who submitted the article, first of all, and hosting something on your home machine certainly isn't HN inappropriate, even if it doesn't hold up terribly well.

I think it'll be interesting to see what Apple does regarding upgrades. Personally, my guess would be on them providing Aperture 4, next version of iWork, &c, without needing a repurchase to whoever purchased it on the App Store.

As far as the second, I'd wager that Valve's cut on Steam is not significantly <30%, even for publishers the size of Activision.
