Mattermost is open core. There are features that aren't available in the open source version and which you have to pay for https://mattermost.com/pricing-self-managed/

When looking for a slack alternative, please primarily look at matrix. It's open source (not open core or source available) and based on open federation. And it keeps improving at a nice rate.

Matrix is open federation, like Email. IRC is closed federation, more like a database cluster or some other distributed service where all components are run by a single team.

This assumes the peers have static IPs? Or how is changing peer IPs handled?

WireGuard is a VPN protocol. There are roughly two kinds of VPN. Those that you use to hide who you are when accessing the Internet (route all your traffic via the VPN to an exit node) and those that you use to build a private network over

It depends on the bridge. Some bridges you might use without being aware. E.g. a public open source room/channel that is bridged between matrix and libera.chat. You just use either IRC or Matrix and interact with other users without ca

Indeed. IRC is closed federation and the server admins are in a great position of power. In an open federation like email or matrix, the power of server admins is much smaller, and this kind of takeover wouldn't happen. Or if it did ha
