It’s also distracting even if doesn’t obscure what I am looking at. Sudden unexpected movement in my peripheral vision! It’s one of the worst web design trends. The iOS Safari bar is done right, at least.

Seeing the future? Picking the right macro strategy, programming language, database, etc ahead of time, sure, an experienced developer can usually do that. But correctly predicting the boundaries of systems, libraries, APIs—and guessing who

My workplace is submitting H1-B applications for TN status employees earlier than normal, probably due to uncertainty around TNs. That said, my latest in-person TN application wasn’t more difficult than before.

Kind of a cool hack: I believe HN used to record upvotes through a CSS rule that (when clicked) caused an empty image to load. No JS required.

I use classes to bind a data structure to a group of functions. That's mostly it. Inheritance, overrides, super calls? The less I use those, the less I miss them.

Have you ever played a flash game? Slither.io? There is a huge market there. Steam is not one click away from a tweet or a Facebook post. Please have a nice weekend.

Games and other 3D applications? Getting people in-game (say a lazily loaded demo with slightly less perf) with one click is huge.

But in what sense would an extra VM layer be more practical? Maybe this is where we disagree. I'm not fond of VMs, especially those two. C++ or Rust -> wasm bytecode is great. Soon we'll be writing directly to command buffers,

I would argue that having to write apps in JS, or transpiling to the JS runtime, is a problem for many people.

I imagine the next step is to provide a WebAssembly binding. edit: "The API has to execute efficiently on WebAssembly and in multi-threaded environment. That means no GC allocations during the rendering loop in order to avoid the garba

Okay, allow me to clarify. A structure editor that has an all-around experience superior to plaintext editing, to the extent that such an editor can gain critical mass/mainstream adoption, remains an unsolved problem.

Agreed. Source code being "denormalized" as plaintext brings practicality, yet also problems like structure-indentation mismatch, or having merge conflicts over a trivial rename. Writing a non-plaintext editor is a huge UI/UX

Hardware wise, Vive's tracking tech supports larger tracking volumes and is more scalable. We'll be able to add quite a few more tracked objects to a Vive scene.

Some potential use cases: - Using Merkle trees, we can assign every node a hash-based ID. So now we can refer to other nodes by ID. This lets us store a graph whose vertices are all the tree nodes. - With the graph, we can now reference bin

I agree with what you're saying, except the last part. Using ASTs as the source of truth (embedded in a source control forest) has benefits that are worth the difficulty.

I've been thinking along the same lines. The "fighting your editor" problem cannot be ignored, and it's common in VPs. Real programming code needs "jank". We need to be able to move between different states: Ba

To add to this, motion sickness from FPS-on-a-screen is inherently unfixable due to the lack-of-locomotion issue. But roomscale VR deals with that issue. VR done right could very well expand the FPS market.
