I don't follow you. Any time I'm inspecting the diff to see if I made the change I want, staging the changes i want progressively and then discarding the rest has worked well.

I think 'git add -p .' would have worked better for the specific example he gave, though. (Step through and stage change by change)

I use both tumblr and Jekyll, but I think it's pretty low risk that tumblr will vanish without any warning. We've known posterous would disappear for a while now. And if you point an rss reader at any blog you get a pretty decent backup tri

I send myself an email for the same purpose and set up an alias for /dev/null. It makes keeping notes a lot easier since I have the copy in sent mail and can reply to it as needed in the future. (this approach seemed less crazy before I t

One minor clarification: by "posts like these..." I did not mean to include their first post on these issues with Heroku. That one had a big effect because of the attention it got. But the follow-up posts come across differently (to a non-c

The first post, definitely. But this one? Maybe I'd feel differently if I were a Heroku customer, so I'll defer to people directly affected.

Guys, you've made a lot more money than me, so you don't need my advice. But if you want money back, you should probably be communicating in private through your lawyers. Posts like this look like you're trying to get (more) attention.

Deja News was a web interface for Usenet, not a newsgroup interface for mailing lists. I don't remember when google groups switched to a web/mailing list setup, but I think it was later than 2002 (when Gmane started).

Is this what you do? Because if someone sends me a csv file, under your workflow I'd have to open it in a text editor (or a different spreadsheet program) to figure out the data type of each column and run it through a perl script (or awk?

Gmane doesn't mirror google groups -- it mirrors public mailing lists and originally was made to reformat them for news readers[1]; some mailing lists use it intentionally as their public archives (emacs org-mode for one) so you might be

Yes, exactly. I think people arguing for "freedom" here need to start listing what papers they want to read and why. Most research isn't exactly accessible even if you hand someone a copy of the paper.

Ironically, your "iris" object can't be a matrix the way it's written. I've had lots of students get confused about the distinction between matrices and data frames. And sapply will sometimes give (IIRC) matrices of lists with a single el

R is exactly like a statistics DSL built on Lisp. The first sentences of a talk by Ihaka [1] are: > R began as an experiment in trying to use the methods of Lisp implementors to build a small testbed which could be used to trial som
