I don't know... this line towards the end suggests you're anti-testing: "It is for this reason that I’m trying desperately to get quantitative humanists using non-parametric and Bayesian methods from the very beginning, before our methodolo

This line is silly: > you can just pretend you went into your experiment with different halting conditions and, voila!, your results become significant. You can misrepresent your results regardless of the underlying statistic. But it

No, I think the purpose of citing claims is to demonstrate that they have validity. People can disagree about what constitutes "validity" and the citation is often inappropriate. But you shouldn't intentionally cite a source that shows yo

That's probably a reasonable description for why most macroeconomists don't work on these models and wouldn't advise a student to start working on them, but if the models were giving new insights or understanding, people would pay attention

Undergraduate econ is nothing like the PhD work. This is a little bit of a problem sometimes in graduate admissions...

If you want a PhD in Econ, do a math undergrad. An econ minor in addition might help a little but is optional.

That's not my impression of the criticism of agent based models and I don't think there's a criticism of the models per se. Computationally intensive models with heterogeneous agents are used in parts of macro (an office neighbor of mine i

Do you know about the recent papers using DSGE models as priors for time series models? e.g. section 4.7.3 here: http://economics.sas.upenn.edu/~schorf/papers/bayesian_macro... (this is the closest I could find to a self-contained link,

It's funny, because my advice is basically the opposite for getting an Econ PhD. You get paid very little during grad school; it seems to exacerbate depression, etc. and is bad for relationships (no formal data to back those up, just my ex

I think you underestimate how long it takes to write a single Econ paper. I don't know enough about CS to make a comparison, though.

I'm sympathetic but torn. I do time series econometrics, partly because macro is important but unrealistic like you say. But I've grown more sympathetic to macro over the last few years. For better or worse, it's a field that only really

FWIW "invading parasites" is a phrase that one should avoid in American English if he or she wants to avoid sounding racist. Many people will read "too much" into it whether intended or not, so it's best to avoid it.

If you use firefox, try the "it's all text" plugin (although I don't know for sure if it works with the new gmail compose). You can write in the editor of your choice.

That was the last paragraph of TFA: The problem from Reddit’s perspective, of course, is that this method of sleuthing would be far less exciting for users, and would probably generate less traffic, than its current free-for-all approach.
