Volunteer moderators are a valid option. And I think may work out better than paid employees.

Its about how the market values those skillsets, not about what people “deserve.” No one is sitting around and setting salaries based on the intrinsic human dignity of the people working jobs.

Yes, considering the workload and responsibility of the position. Non-profits run into the problem of creating cushy jobs that just burn doner money. Arxiv is basically a giant folder in the cloud and shouldnt have such high paying jobs. At

I disagree. Sometimes it’s useful to point out dumb things. As long as it’s not cruel. I think being efficient in speech is helpful and no need to be constructive with silly or damaging comments. I don’t think this is a case of just finding

I don’t think my comment is any snarkier than yours. My intent wasn’t snark, but more incredulity at how the post was written and how it states some very old, commonly accepted best practice was novel or finally time to use. I’d make a simi

I use Jekyll and other builders independent of GitHub. So even weird companies with other git repos can still autogenerate docs.

A lot of my drm-free mp3s come from friends. I probably have 2000+ cds that I’ve ripped, or downloads from buying vinyl. I’ll make a copy for friends to load onto devices and it’s the equivalent of loaning a disc to a friend. I suppose ther

That time was like 10 years ago. I think it’s been best practice to have docs in the repo for a long time. GitHub Pages came out in 2008.

Sorry, autocorrect changed “skeezy” to “sleepy.” I think at the end of the comment, too. It wasn’t an immediate word or sentence change. I need to work harder to proof comments before posting. (Autocorrect changed “proof” to “prof” at the e

Meetup is kind of like that. I use it for ongoing hiking clubs and book clubs and movie clubs. Comically, Facebook sort of serves this way as well by brining together hiking clubs and d&d groups.

The solution to loneliness isn’t fake connections. And I think makes it even worse because fake friends don’t act like real people and make it harder to form real relationships with people who have their own desires and needs and aren’t jus

Isn’t $2/hour a pretty high salary in Philliphines? This is skeezy (edit: fixing autocorrect’s sleepy), but then so is chatting with onlyfans models. It’s already a fake, paradoxical relationship and even that aspect is fake. It’s delu

Isn’t this just Iran trying to hit anything “of value” and it really a strategic target? I doubt they are thinking things through vs just firing off semi randomly.

It’s surprising to me how expensive cars are. There was the Covid spike, but prices have stayed high. I suppose the manufacturers understand demand enough, but I’ve had friends buy cars recently and they didn’t even consider new cars. $30k

There is no Chromebook with the same build quality as a Mac at a comparable price. Thomas try for $1000 MacBooks and even more so for $600. This is an important feature as kids are rough on machines. Security on Macs is good and I’m not sur

Why would anyone doing “real work” want this? If you’re doing “real work” then 16gb won’t be sufficient, either. My “real work” machine has 96 and I sometimes wish it had more.

This reminds me out the outsourcing craze of the 00s when my employer wanted 80% of code written by our Indian partner. And they measured it by lines of code. Quite a bit of my time was spend rewriting the massive amounts of garbage churned

Not necessarily. If I minimize my project and get everything on one line, is that good? I think not. Measuring success based on how may or how few lines there are is a bad idea, I think.

What about commutes stops you from bringing lunch? You don’t need to buy food in bulk. Just buy regular food, cook it, and take it to work. Either take stuff that doesn’t need refridge (pb&j, hummus, etc), or insulated lunchbox, or ther
