I’ve found Mistral OpenOrca is pretty much as good as GPT4-turbo for creative writing/analysis. Actually it tends to output very similar text, which is suspicious, but whatever it saves me a lot of money. https://huggingface

There’s semi lock-in. You can use torch, but you also have to use their framework. Not much different than using cuda I guess.

I’ve mostly been wondering when the 0% interest 12 month financing for stuff was going to go away. That was the only thing I’ve used it for.

I use a synology for TM (raid 1) and it uses btrfs which has checksums to prevent bitrot. Either that or something running ZFS would be the obvious options: https://kb.synology.com/en-us/DSM/tutorial/How_to_en

I have Photos set to download all the files locally, and those get backed up with Time Machine and Backblaze. People forget even s3 will lose files. The reliability is high sure but it’s still sub 100%

The BSD licensed stuff isn't outdated, it's actually directly from FreeBSD 14.0 afaict. ZSH is current (5.9) in Sonoma for example.

It wasn’t just the US. The energy crisis seems to have had extraordinary long tail effects. Everything was stagnating in the 70s and then we end up with Reagan, Thatcher, Gorbachev, etc. It might just be that the structure and productivity

It’s not the thunderbolt controller totally, the Vega and GCN (RX580 etc) Radeon cards on older Macs don’t support DSC. The 16 inch MBP had RDNA cards (which do) For example the Vega MPX cards on the Mac Pro don’t do it, but the 5700 etc ca

It’s perfectly fine for glue type stuff in a CI pipeline imo. There’s frankly no easier way to work with files.

I don’t know but I’m curious: I’d imagine at that many cores you’re probably reaching the limits of how much power the socket can realistically get? I know some motherboards have that supplemental power port.
