Heck, I can be technically-savvy and I prefer the "just works" experience of Windows. It rarely gets in the way. All major software and games work on Windows. I don't even think about hardware compatibility. It just disappear

Well, maybe. People do vote. You can look at the strong opposition local and state level politicians see with any property tax or state income tax increase. There's a built-in regulating mechanism. Taxes are usually one of the top issu

I think this simplifies things a bit too much. Fiscal and monetary policies are administered by two separate branches of government, the Fed and Congress. The Fed is only nominally under democratic control, with just the board members appro

One remarkable person from this time period is Gudrid Thorbjarnardóttir, who had the first European child in the Americas (outside Greenland) and then made a pilgrimage to Rome. She's probably the most well-travelled woman of the 11th

A camera in glasses is always going to be too intrusive I think. Norms may change, but even if there's a clear light indicating that a photo or video is being taken, it's offputting to feel the possibility of a recording happening

I want to share an amazing experience I recently had. I was looking through TV consoles on Crate & Barrel and found one I liked. I was unsure if it'd be too tall for my room (it's an extra 9 inches of height over my current TV

It's wonderful to see his OSS work celebrated. One can only hope to be recognized for great work like this at the end of their life. I don't do much open-source work, and most corporate systems I worked on will probably be obsolet

At least in the middle of Manhattan, I've learned to rely on the direction of cars up and down avenues to tell which way I'm facing. I know that Eighth Ave goes up because I live and work around there, and so can extrapolate for t

The distinction here is that this effect requires a quantum-mechanical understanding of the world to be understood at the core. It's not like the simple movement of a ball in a parabola, which can be explained in classical terms.

Not to mention the Fed chair and board is appointed by Congress. It's meant to be an indirect choice, but it is a choice none-the-less. It's just like how Supreme Court justices are appointed. They have similarly broad powers fair
