I recall some one say we should write poems in the every day - on receipts, post-it notes, anywhere anytime. Programmers do this sometimes for things that help us along, or just for the joy of it - a script to watch for reservations at a re

A hundred acres being modest is still astounding to me. In India, the average is something like 6 acres. The vast majority of farming families have less than 20 acres. Of course, the differences in farming population (something like 700 mil

I think it's ok to have horizontal monitors even for "top-to-bottom" scripts. That's simply because it's less taxing for us to use. Plus, mouse scrollwheels work just as well so it's not problem to navigate.

Yes! The website of the president of Mongolia has three versions, including one with the traditional top-to-bottom script. It's quite well-designed! You can see web-design features that make sense for this script: the nav-bar being on

Why would YouTube not get Borg charge-backs? YouTube does pay for the infra it uses. And it's likely much cheaper than it would be if it were an independent company with its own data centers.

This is one of those old school things I missed when I moved from Microsoft to Google, another being having a private office. (Though Microsoft is switching to open plan offices as well as a cost saving measure.) The Microsoft library had t

It's not perfect, but it's not terrible either. Millions of creators and billions of users generally have a good experience on YouTube. There's been no "let's try Mastodon" moment.

Actually, you can do another cool thing, too. The IPFS ecosystem has IPNS, which generates a public/private-key-back hash-name, which can point to another IPFS hash. So this way, a shadow librarian group can have one IPNS hash that alw

You bring up a great insight - that blockchain/pinning are on opposite ends of the spectrum of what one can choose to store, if one participates in the system at all. We do have a good example of this already I think: torrent client pe

That's a great idea, and also amusing. :) It's amazing that we can refer to data in a globally-unique way with small content-based hashes. Hash collisions aren't usually worth worrying about. Another benefit is that its easy

Current shadow libraries (zlib, libgen, scihub) suffer from centralized data hosting and opaque librarians/custodians (who modify metadata and gate inclusion/exclusion of content). We already have the tools to solve this. 1. Files
