Not much use unless you specify the size of the pot ;) By my calculation, 1MWh is enough to boil 600 17-liter pots, which isn't very human-relatable.

It's just a handy reference for energy usage, and I assume this figure is more readily available due to the car being battery powered. It's a bit harder to work out for an ICE-powered car, as you'd have to calculate the energ

You mean, like manufacturing electronics? It takes about 1MWh to manufacture a laptop, the same energy needed to drive a Tesla for 3000 miles. https://www.networkworld.com/article/2229029/computer-factor...

I had no idea how much water was consumed by the semiconductor industry, although I did know about the incredible energy usage and generation of toxic waste. What if the most unsustainable parts of a car are the semiconductors in the infota

The Raspberry Pi is a terrible example of "open computing". As well as the usual Broadcom close-source binary blob drivers, you also have a proprietary operating system running underneath Linux (ThreadX, now owned by Microsoft).

Fortunately, I live in a country where I think there is less chance of such things happening. However - is mandated smartphone ownership the future we want? It goes without saying that almost all government over-reach is done "for your

I've spent the last year or so trying to control my smartphone usage, by removing apps and trying to set rules for myself like "your phone stays in the kitchen for most of the day". I recently took the plunge and got rid of i

Consensus is not the hard part. By "game theory", you mean "agree with everyone else, or we'll take your Eth away". The hard part is figuring out how to execute arbitrary code and synchronize it across all shards, w

You mean "the really easy part"? The Beacon Chain doesn't do much at all. Last time I checked, they hadn't even got a design for how contract code would be executed in Eth 2.0.

One day, books will be written about the predatory and degrading tactics used by Silicon Valley companies of all types. It is ironic that in an area of the country that prides itself on its own "progressiveness", people are more t

Why? I also gave up my smartphone, so my idea was that by leaving, it would be obvious to my friends that they cannot communicate with me in that way (except, as I now know, it is not obvious).

You have very carefully tested the hypothesis that "neither Amazon nor its sellers care about good customer service or quality products". The question is - what are you going to do with that information?

It does seem to me that this has been done ass-backwards. That is - first mask mandates (and in many countries, too), then the research that supports the idea that they do anything. Or, in this case, "researchers propose".

I gave up my smartphone 2 weeks ago, after a year or two of paring down apps and accounts, and experimenting with techniques like leaving my phone in a fixed spot in the kitchen most of the time (including at night). I finally took the plun

The counterpoint to that is that Starlink is just the latest in a series of massively government-funded projects attempting to bring global comms coverage using LEO satellites (Iridum, Inmarsat, OneWeb).

Lichenstein has had only 52 Covid deaths, yet is 11th in the world for Covid deaths per capita. What possible value is there in comparing raw death numbers, without a reference to the population of the country in question?

Those are all excellent points, but are related to the accuracy of Brazil's reported figures, and not the manner in which The Atlantic chooses to report those numbers. Using raw death count is just misleading.

I already pointed out it's on the slightly higher end of esimtates, but it is reasonably accurate. Regardless of Musk's promises, EV battery pack manufacture takes a lot of energy. Given that you say hydrocarbon fuels (which are t
