If this is the best you can do with an HTML5 'app' then native apps have a long future. It's buggy, laggy, animations are wrong, graphics are low resolution in places, and user interface widgets are odd and non standard.

Unintended consequences seem like trouble here. Like many people I keep my phone in my pants pocket, if it were face inwards when I did that and I sit down then it'd turn off the alerts. Apple would get roasted if they did such a thing

Please. It's not a bubble, nor a religion. REST offers some significant objective advantages over SOAP in most use cases. We wouldn't have the proliferation of APIs that we do today if everyone had to use SOAP.
