In China I found that using a UDP based OpenVPN to Slicehost was higher performing than the TCP on top of TCP issues that you get with SSH Tunneling when there's packet loss. There's even some pretty decent desktop clients for OpenVPN, see

Well, the reason why speculation about Apple is posted so furiously is that a lot of people do care. After all, Apple controls some 90% of the high end PC market (>$1000). Don't like the posting? Don't read it.

On Rogers in downtown Vancouver on an iPhone 3GS and I've never had a dropped call. Data is fast, no issues. It's AT&T, not the iPhone.

A demographic implosion of China is all but inevitable now. The 4-2-1 problem (one child must support 7 people: 2 retired parents and 4 retired grandparents) will strain the society to the breaking point. And it's too late to do anything

I bought my iPhone in Beijing for 4800RMB, this included delivery to my apartment. It was unlocked, jailbroken and had WIFI. This let me use it with my mobile account on China Mobile since few people use China Unicom. I have many friends

Well, the problem here is that we're talking about a possible run away greenhouse effect that will condemn most of humanity to death. The point being is that you must act now in order to stop it and that this is the rational approach even

Correct, it doesn't really guide you here. It just tells you that you don't need to be certain of the outcome before acting due to the potential extreme costs of inaction.

No, Pascal's Wager is foolish since you could not possibly select the correct god from the myriad of gods available (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc) given that belief is mutually exclusive. At any rate it's not the same thing.

The climate is an enormously complex thing with so many variables that it's difficult to analyze. If you do not believe the claims for Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) I suggest you consider the Precautionary Principle: http://en.wikiped

The DNS tools are considerably better IMHO. Take a look at the screenshots on their site. It's pretty cheap so if you have a significant amount of hosts with Slicehost it's worth picking up a linode for a month just to test yourself.

I switched from Slicehost to Linode and haven't looked back. Their management GUI is complicated but way more powerful.

It's a fallacy that OSX has less viruses due to market share. The reason there's virtually no viruses is because there's separation of privilege on OSX. You don't run as administrator the way you do commonly under Windows.

Cool stuff, much appreciated. I notice that the code contains the use of 'goto' to handle an error condition. Seems clean. Being somewhat of a intermediate programmer I've always read to stay away from 'goto'. Anyone care to comment on t

Everyone always gets stars in their eyes about China, don't believe the hype. Few foreign companies actually do well. Ask Blizzard for instance how it's going for them with WoW. If you're not Chinese you will be manipulated and milked f

In which case you should be using your own shortener if you want to preserve your own links. Or if you're a company scanning other links then you should be resolving the short urls as you receive the entries.

This whole link rot is massively over stated. Most short urls are used on Twitter. Who is reading old Tweets on Twitter? Almost nobody since Twitter is about now, not yesterday. By the time you switch over to some 301works archive the l

Not sure why people are saying the whole business was based on tr.im. Was pretty clear in the articles I read that tr.im was a side project for Nambu. Seems that Nambu acknowledged pretty clearly that URL shortening isn't a business.
