This argument doesn't hold water. Why is there no decent regional train system in the US then? Your point explains why there is no coast to coast NYC-SF bullet train, fair enough. Each US megaregion [0] could have a decent train system

Half of the problem with cars is a geometric one, they take up too much space. They give rise to sprawl and thus increase the demand for cars in a vicious cycle. Them being electric or self driving will not solve that.

I checked: Paris-Bordeaux toll is 55€ (US$63 with tax) for 563km (350 miles) of highway, 583km total. Add 34L (9 US gal., 39MPG!) of fuel @1.5€/L (US$6.6 per gallon) that is 51€ of fuel. So toll+fuel total, that's at least 106€ ($

kWh is for energy stored in this example, the "size of the tank". kWh is analogous to toe (tonne of oil equivalent) or gallons of gas. kW is for power, that is the flow of energy (energy/s), another non SI unit is horsepower.

I don't know about the UK but in France, big cities got 3 post deliveries per day at some point. I'm sure Paris got more at some point.
