It's grim. I'm in the UK where the government has done less than some EU governments so far to cushion the consumer price rises, and they're predicting the average energy bill to be £7.7k next year. The median UK household in

Seeing the numbers in this thread (even for Germany) and comparing to the UK is frankly depressing. My experience matches everyone else in this sub-thread, £650/day for years and finally reached £700/day. But as these are short te

I would like this to be available as a search engine too, so I can input an idea and get relevant citations for it. This would help explore prior work in any field.

A 1000x this. I see it with other software companies chasing enterprises (or at least VC backed companies) - Varnish Cache is a particularly egregious example. In the end it hurts them because a developer or consultant may find a problem th

I've heard this a lot recently about storing embeddings. As someone who has dabbled in ML I don't understand what it means. Can you point me to a good overview of the topic please?

Meanwhile the boomer generation in the UK is shouting how the drought of 1976 was worse and they survived without making a fuss (ergo anyone who makes a fuss is "soft", a "snowflake" or has been fooled that climate chang

Doesn't the container help with versioning the software inside it, but you're still tied to the host computer's operating system, and so when you upgrade that you have to test every single container to see if anything broke?

In the UK and Europe at large I expect, we're told to take them to the local recycling centre (the euphemism for the rubbish dump). They keep them separate and I guess incinerate them under more controlled conditions.

$19/month is quite a jump up from free. I set a business up to use Netlify to host a handful of legacy static sites (some with build processes, some without), because it was easier to do than S3 + Cloudfront. They have a GitHub organis

I like One Big (virtual) Server until you come to software updates. At a current project we have one server running the website in production. It runs an old version of Centos, the web server, MySQL and Elasticsearch all on the one machine.

And data security? Can you answer that part of the question? Most of my ML training is done using personal data or sensitive documents, and I have not found a cheap provider yet that I can use.

Yes. I found it incredibly disorientating, even after the event because time has passed and I have no awareness of it.

Start typing a Web address, hit tab and search that website. In Chrome it works reliably for me; in Firefox it works for a small subset of the sites that work in Chrome.

As a data point I've just joined a small project which already has a JS framework (Vue) and 2 build systems (1 broken) and the developer has just added React and a third build system. No talk of migration - they're going to run in

No. CSS source maps are a recent addition to Vue, and JS source maps have had multiple problems in dev and prod. Check the GitHub issues for full details.

Yes. It's why keeping up with the latest on HN isn't essential for most of us - we've got 5 years to see if it's worth adopting :)

The "In the long run" bit is the problem. Here in the UK people stay in a house for about 10 years before moving. It's impossible to get payback on many investments in that time, and when you sell your house the improvements
