Because a solder layer would have much higher thermal transfer rate per area than thermal paste. And the IHS is bigger than the die, resulting in better cooling (because there is more 'bandwidth' (=area) at the point where TIM is used).. wh

The '>20 W/mK' claimed by this method, while a lot better than the 5 W/mK of regular TIM, is still a fair way off the 80 W/mK that the article claimed for a soldered solution.

The logical next step, sadly unexplored, would have surely been to do some testing without the IHS? E: turns out it doesn't really help[0], though that doesn't mean it wouldn't have been better if soldered. 0. http://www.overclock.net/t/12

Yes, because they are not mature products. If i had suggested in 2003 we took the tablet PC, swapped in an arm processor and took away all the ports, i'm sure you wouldn't have thought it was such a great idea either. The basic problem is t

I am not an expert, but my understanding is that it would have some effect (worse than UK hosting, presumably better than outside EU), but I doubt very much. Faster hosting should have a positive effect, too.

Value your time appropriately is good advice, but it does not exist in a vacuum-- the author is just working backwards here to post-justify his decision. If anyone actually used this logic (note the expectation of 4-9 failures per success t

Quite disappointing gains considering the move to 22nm, 3d transistors, and being delayed (from Jan). I could live with the overclocking/heat issues if it meant more undervoltage headroom- but this doesn't seem to be the case either.. odd.

I don't agree at all with this article, imo loving music has nothing to do with the things in the article. But to claim Radiohead fans aren't big music fans is massively closed-minded. You might not like them, and that's fine. However, Radi

I am guessing that most PCB/PS -like electronics would pass this without any specific attention, given there were no major manufacturing defects? I'm a little unsure why TI made efforts to avoid it.. or just because they could?

Can we use this opportunity to actually discuss what is involved in CE certification in this case? It doesn't have any radios so electromagnetic compatibility directive shouldn't apply, and the low-voltage directive states it's for 'equipme

Anyone looking to learn a different keyboard layout to qwerty should look broader than dvorak. Others have mentioned colemak, which is decent but QGMLWY layout[0] does better in testing[1], and with reduced pinky use. 0. The carpalx layouts

Yes, it is wanting to avoid encoding and the associated delay and/or disk space. If I could re-encode and immediately stream with insignificant latency, with a weak CPU, then that might be a reasonable option.

Very neat. What i don't understand- probably to do with the jPlayer- is that it seems to know the length of the song before it has all loaded (because of the seekbar lengths), yet it only increases the time string as the file is loaded.

I don't see it as manipulative. I'm not a massive fan of the phrasing, but the question is just a differently-dressed version of 'what are your priorities'. If you get worked up about that, then it would be a definite black mark against emp

It bothers me too (especially this case), but i think it's relevant to note that the US has never refused an extradition to the UK, but the UK has refused several to the US. OTOH, the US has made more requests, and capital punishment.
