“They” in your 2nd paragraph is probably making it hard to reason out. You’re imagining Russia to be a nation with somewhat rational self interest, right? It isn’t. Russia today is Vladimir Putin serving Vladimir Putin’s interests. He is d

The defining characteristics of IE in the dark ages were that 1) it was ubiquitous 2) web sites developed to it and, instead of fixing sites in other browsers, they recommended its use over other browsers. You often couldn’t even log into y

I guess it wouldn't if one didn't value people. YMMV, but I think people are kind of cool — so if I hear a great song I want to know who the artist was. It helps me build a mental model of what I might be able to expect from them.

The missile was locked [Edit: had mistakenly said “guided”] by where the pilot was looking, and guided by IR so that it could hit precisely. Also, this missile had no warhead. They removed it on purpose to limit the damage. They wanted to m

NeXT faced that same possibility, and they dealt with it by making it as easy as activating a single check box, so that it would be silly for developers not to.

Just yesterday I was wondering why — with the ubiquity of surveillance, phones, and body cams — we haven’t yet seen footage of good cops intervening to stop people like Tyre Nichols from being beaten to death.

“Not in that headspace” sounds a lot like the asymmetry of empathy he mentioned in this article, which was an observation that resonated with me. (“…because they don’t perceive it…”)

It’s amazing that MS, despite its vast resources, hasn’t managed to improve this situation. Tiny, beleaguered NeXT had fat binaries for 4 architectures. Surely Redmond could solve this.

I’d say that politicians — who really only truly represent the richest 1% of citizens — losing is perfectly fair. If they want to play to win, they should adopt policies with a broad enough appeal to win the hearts and minds of more voters.
