We already had a de-facto infinite set... it was the m part. We could either buy up common variations of, or ignore the n part. Now it is becoming obvious that ICANN views n as the new m for one of two reasons: money or stupidity. I'm s

This is stupid. Why doesn't the ICANN just sell TLD's instead of domains? If you're going to make a million TLD's why even bother with the domains at all? The last thing I want in my root namespace is hard-coded categorical pigeon-holeing i

I like the raphael.js highlighting interface. Would be nice to get a randomized puzzle/wordbank. Small bug: if you highlight the same word over and over again, it will eventually say "Good Work!" as if you finished the puzzle.

I was in the earthquake in Tokyo (a few kilometers from Odaiba where that video was likely taken) and I can say I believe it. Out this far from the epicenter it felt very wobbly. It was like my house was on a block of Jell-o. It felt like a

Awesome. We'll see you there! Today I realized that we picked an Irish bar and its kinda close to St Patrick's day. Hopefully it's not too crowded/annoying. If so we'll think up a plan B and turn it into a bar crawl.

Maybe someone can answer a question I've long had: in a BSD licensed library, isn't the copyright distributed over all collective author's, not just he one listed in the license? That's why some projects make people sign agreements stating

Oh damn, I didn't even think of that, it's a short walk away. That would have been a good place! It's a live-house though so maybe not the best venue for a meet-up.

Follow our RSS feed or watch HN and you'll see the announcements. Otherwise send Jason or me an email (jason or paul @ makeleaps) and... oh shaking now again... ok I think it stopped... and we'll put you on the mailing list.

There's gotta be more nerds in Tokyo than just us… I think they've all turned off their computers to save energy for the blackout. :-)

I'm really looking forward to seeing all of you guys again. Sorry for the short notice… If you can't make it we'll have a real scheduled meet-up some time soon when things are more calm.

Now you seem to be attributing safety in Japan not to monoculture but to /Japanese/ culture. Fair enough. Yes I wasn't careful enough in my writing. I mean to say that monoculture allows you to optimize around your values. Lowest common d

I agree the word "abandon" sounds too final. It sounds like they've given up on it which is not true. I think a non-sensationalist headline would say workers have "pulled away".

OK, I shouldn't have said that because it is an overgeneralization and is overshadowing the point I was trying to make. Coming from New York, I still think people generally don't lock their bikes. They certainly don't chain them to posts wi

Please note that I'm not saying all monocultures are safe. I am certainly also not saying multi-cultures are unsuccessful. This has nothing to do with safety or success, more efficiency gains and tolerance costs. I'm trying to raise a nua

Yes, people lock their bikes: they all have that built in wheel lock thing. It's not like it's a perfect utopia. People are actually very careful about that. Nobody rides around with the giant NYC-style bolt-cutter proof chain like a belt t

Sure... I've thought about that a lot too. You're saying I should have challenged their values with mine. I probably should have said something. And yet I would spend all day long every day in arguments with people who just don't agree wi

Japan takes a lot of criticism for being a closed off culture. After living here for a while I have started to believe that it is necessary to support these values. Multiculturalism means lowest common denominator. There are efficiencies yo

People here in Japan like to go to radium hot springs. Yes, that radium that your parents had your basement tested for. Apparently they think it's good for you to get a little radiation: http://metropolis.co.jp/features/feature/searching

It's not fun. Clinging to the carpet is a good instinct. Many people run around in a crazy panic but there's really nowhere to go. Most people here climb under something sturdy right away. I visited an elementary school and they had special
