I absolutely loved Construx growing up. I also had the motor box for it and distinctly remember my father explaining how gear ratios can increase torque by trading off turning speed using the rubber o-rings and yellow pulleys. One advantage

Is there a word for muscle memory but for your eyes? After so many years it's going to take a while to get used to but first impression is that it looks nice and readable. Code snippets look much better.

Thanks! This is a pretty good description of a scenario where quantum effects can do something that a classical model can't.

I think I wasn't clear. I'm not trying to call this one person out for failing here… The tech reporter part wasn't my point. Even physicists don't have very good metaphors to use. My point is that any analogy I've

I have never been comfortable with the metaphors that tech reporters use for describing quantum entanglement. They always talk as if it's a spooky interaction but the metaphor falls down. Here's an example: I take too halves of an

Do you think that… like when President Nixon had a speech prepared for if Apollo blew up or if the astronauts got stranded on the moon, Randall Munroe has planned out special frames for if something goes wrong?

Wow, this sounds like a total clown-car operation: Out of the first group of 30 dogs, only four managed to detonate their bombs near the German tanks, inflicting an unknown amount of damage. Six exploded upon returning to the Soviet trench

I'm sure it's actually a spooky feeling people are getting but somehow this wired article fails to convince me. The researchers suggest that the subjects’ brains reconcile this mismatch by creating the illusion of another presenc

OK, this is a cool idea and I really like the pitch. My one criticism is that featuring several shots of a "Made in Palm Springs" site that features the Brooklyn Bridge seems like a non-sequiter.

To me the age of the software sounds a bit like channel-stuffing. Often manufacturers will report on devices as being sold once they've left the factory for the retail store, not when they are in a consumer's hands. Because there

Oh! Also, if you're in Tokyo in November, come on out the the Hacker News Tokyo user meetup. We can discuss all of this in great detail in person: http://hntokyo.doorkeeper.jp/

With all of the prius and electric vehicles, you can't count on your ears to save you anymore anyway. Tokyo gets a lot of things right about zoning but the way bike lanes are designed here is absolutely maddening.

Even after reading that, I'm still not convinced it's any worse than something like btrfs+non-ECC memory. The most convincing part is the 'there are less tools' to recover from corruption angle.

This is exactly why chemistry is so interesting and the ways in which things can combine is also why it is so difficult. Fundamentally, it's mostly about the electron charges on an atom which are balanced out by the number of protons i

Keeping you anonymous to the charity to preventing them from spamming you with mail is maybe the best part of this pitch. Even well run charities send a tremendous amount of mail after you give a donation. It's one of the big turnoffs

That first chart is terrible. I can't believe the Washington Post allows a chart which gives a 2 year period from 2010-2012 the same visual width as 10 year periods. It makes it look like the rate has leveled off.

Focusing on aerodynamics is important because they dominate the efficiency at high speeds but you can get pretty far without going to this extreme. For example, the Honda CR-X HF was getting over 50 MPG in the early 1980's and it was

I've long thought that one of the highest impact things scientists and engineers could be working on is developing a form of ivory that is indistinguishable from real thing to collapse the market. It seems like it should be feasible.

My twitter stream is now full of people, some of whom I am sure do not have the skill to evaluate if something is a JavaScript security threat or not, who have copied and pasted a random script they read on the internet into the developer c
