I'm already signed up to be notified when it becomes available to use in Europe. Until it does, FastSpring certainly seems good enough (and defers the effort of setting up a non-static website to handle purchases, which is worth a fair bit

You're thinking of iOS. On the Mac, you can distribute apps out-of-band, although you still need to pay Apple for the digital signature, or else your app won't run on a default Mountain Lion installation.

I've had FastSpring recommended by others as well and I am planning to use that service. Having dealt with accepting payment via PayPal I can only say: never again - they still owe me money, but I eventually gave up after I spent days tryin

Could be because they dropped support for 32-bit kernels in 10.8, and generally pretty much everything apart from public libraries are 64-bit only.

Resetting the SMC [1] on my Macbook Air (late 2010) seems to have fixed the wifi issue. Obviously, no guarantee that'll fix it on yours... Unfortunately, I've had all sorts of other, less intermittent issues with Mountain Lion. Finder is ex

This is from the point of view of an outsider, but I get the impression that YC's operational costs are substantial at this point. Aquihires might look good based on cash valuation of YC investments, but that hides the investment of intangi

This doesn't mention the distinction between criticism and discouragement. Damning, but valid criticism can sound a lot like the dismissive reactions in the article, if not phrased constructively. Sometimes crap is just crap and you're best

That's just defeatism, not arguing against cathedral-style development. Just because we're likely to be wrong to some degree doesn't mean we shouldn't try to be as close to right as possible. Anyway, I get the impression that for the origin

So what you're saying is that progressively tidying up a codebase to simplify fulfilling current requirements is always a bad idea because you might remove something that might make a hypothetical future requirement easier to fulfill?

I can't speak for the gp, but I certainly would still be on Snow Leopard if development for the current version of iOS was still supported on it. I'm now seriously considering switching back to Linux as a desktop OS as I hardly do any iOS w

This reminds me of the Mountain Lion/Gatekeeper announcement. We heard it second hand from John Gruber [1] so it's possible the facts got mixed up on the way, but developer IDs for Gatekeeper were supposed to be free. As it turns out, they

64-bit integers don't really solve the bugs, they just make them slightly less probable. They basically don't help against malicious input in the general case. The most famous example for this kind of bug is probably the binary search imple

Yeah, that would require type inference via the expression/return value though and not even C++ can do that (by and large anyway). But then ObjC as a language in general doesn't seem to care much for type safety anyway. I realise this makes

Re 1: The iPad has 786432 pixels vs the iPod 4G's 614400. Not that big a difference, particularly as that mainly affects the framebuffer. If each pixel in the back, front and Z buffers uses 32 bits, that's a whopping 2MB RAM difference, or

So, there have been a few replies to this post, but as far as I can tell, you're asking about maintaining invariants ("not breaking the structure"), which nobody has addressed so far. Let's have a look how this is handled in different types
