You don't get hired as a big wig in 1 month. That process takes quite a while, so the one month was probably just the ending part, the culmination of many months or even a year of recruitment effort. That he took the $23m anyway just means

That's what they say when you point out that college doesn't really -> job anymore. I went to college, and pretty much got jack shit for an education. I educated myself. I went to a small high, Catholic high school and learned more ther

The word you're looking for is "college."

This piece is probably right, but in a purely sociopathic sort of way, Hurd did the rational thing: take the $23m for signing the confidentiality agreement, then worry about actually keeping that money later. A bird in the hand...

When I asked, that was kind of my point: There are alternatives, but nothing that works internationally except places that we don't have any reason to expect to be more reliable than paypal is(n't).

This is a critically important message. I tell people this all the time when they ask "how I do it" -- well, the answer is that I just do it. While they are watching TV and faffing around, I'm trying things and building things. You do it by

They are only happy because they weren't charging me enough, and I was willing to pay that extra cost too, so it really is their loss.

I don't really go for new release type movie generally, so I call shenanigans. I was a heavy user who got movies sometimes the day after I returned the last one, which was great. Then I started getting them 3, 4, 5 days later. They blamed U

I wasn't so lucky with them. I was a good customer, but they started silently throttling my account, and they wouldn't admit to it either. It's since come out that that's exactly what they were doing. If it's too expensive to send me that m

I'm kind of a crazy person when it comes to eating healthily, but I wasn't always. It's clear to me now, sitting on the other side of the chasm, that your notion of what "tastes good" is completely fabricated by marketing and a lifetime of

It's a voting system. If you don't have anything to show, people probably won't vote to let you in. You need a minimum number of votes to get in, so I'd get crackin' on those impressive projects 8)

We can talk, sure. And yes, pxlpshr speaks truly--Ben is a great designer, the founder of the root, and he was the first rooter to work for FB.

The Root is amazing, you will not find a more talented group of people. A couple of us post here on HN. It's invite only but getting in is just a matter of having a connection (you do) and an impressive portfolio (do you?) http://www.thero

This speaks really strongly to me. This is why I stopped working in the field too. It's not impossible to find an awesome job, but it's also not easy. It's maybe as difficult to find a good job as it is to find a good programmer.

Yeah, that's the cool thing about my business too. I get e-mail all the time about how people were on the brink, and now their life is turned around. It's awesome.

I laughed reading this because I read all the dashes and pauses as William Shatner explaining privacy. Reread it in that frame, and you'll love it! I do think you're wrong though. Rights have limits, even rights we can all pretty much agree

I don't think it's hyperbole at all. That the 99 Designs "logo" is as terrible as it is, proves nothing about the almost-as-terrible logo that is in use now.

I once worked at a software company where a big deal has been made for software + hardware. It was a lot of hardware, and the software was maybe 10% of the overall cost, which was approaching $1million. Then the company backed out and said

It's not earth shattering, but it's an interesting look at the broken criminal system (can't call it a justice system...) from the type of guy who is rarely in a position to really see it.

I did this without really planning it during my break between high school and college. I really enjoyed it, but it's not really practical if you have a "normal" family life. It's kind of analogous to a lot of good software ideas, that would

I've thought quite a bit about this, and I don't know what the answer will ultimately be, but I do feel strongly that a world in which we can all live shamelessly and honestly will be better than the clouded and duplicitous public life the

$40/hr. I'd expect to pay at at least $2,000 for an identity package which usually means some collateral as well as the "logo" itself.

I'd like to just throw my hat in the ring in support of Steve here, who wrote exactly what I would have in response to you. And I'm talking from experience as well. Your assumptions are quite common though, so it's nothing unusual.
