Give Web Ahead on 5by5 a listen. Sometimes might be too basic for some, but interesting tidbits all over I think.

Why SSH into a VM? With Virtualbox I have a folder shared out that I can use like a regular folder and edit with whatever editor on my Host. Or you could turn on SMB shares and use those. Or I could run a lightweight X environment (or even

Unless you're on an ancient laptop I don't see why you wouldn't run a Linux VM if you are developing web apps. What is the advantage of trying to make OS X your development environment and then deploying to a Linux host? Unless you have an

Instead of trying to fight Cygwin just use a VirtualBox install of a linux flavor. If you're deploying to a Linux box it makes even more sense.

Having just spent the past couple of months learning webforms ASP.NET coming from a PHP/RoR background what you said is exactly what frustrated me. Knowing how webforms tried to warp how the web actually works was truly annoying. I understa

My thoughts exactly. Even Verizon's commercials highlight "This and thousands of other free apps..." Experience in this space with my company is much the same. iOS outsold our Android version 7 to 1 and the iOS app was out for less than hal

It's not even like you're trying to get the others to brush their teeth, you're simply adding onto their experience. And if the technology gets cheap enough that the toothbrush they buy has it built-in anyway all the better. Not everyone wi

Here's the thing about fads, there's always a new one to take its place. Usually a little different and sometimes a little better in ways, but still a fad that pretty much does the same thing. People might get bored with the farmville rewar

Not sure what the big deal is. Customer doesn't feel like the price they are paying is worth the value and leaves. Only difference is that there are alternatives to this "critical service." Had this been a rant about the electric company go

That's what I always thought.Plus when you're older, for most I'd guess, your life becomes full of routines. I used to think sitting through a 3 hour lecture was an eternity. Now after sitting at a desk for 10 hours a day 3 hours is just se

It's more of a computer for the present then, not the past. It will make money for Apple in a similar fashion to the way the Wii made money for Nintendo. If it truly is for the masses then the only success or failure is based on if those ma

If you want less page spam in your results write better queries into the search engine. There are still plenty of good results and it's fairly easy to ignore these SPAM pages just like you ignore banner ads. If the author said that Google's

Why there was a need to make a thick abstraction over HTML and HTTP I'll never really understand. How could you want to obscure what are very easy and simple tools still baffles me. And having talked with some programmers who use nothing bu

It all depends on how your development works. Let's look at a scenario where you are using an outside framework. Not writing tests for your code? Framework v2.0 comes out and you want to use a great new feature in that version. Will your ap

Unfortunately my main site hasn't given me an excuse to tinker with the setup, so I'm going to ask here. Right now I use Apache 2.2.x in front of a pack of Mongrels and mod_cache is enabled to cache content based on Expires headers. (I trie
