This is about a protein family that mediate different classes of splice sites. If you're interested in the larger context you might look into the term "alternative splicing" to learn more.

There seems to be a disingenuous attempt by many respondents to get readers to focus on definitions and ignore the trends. I suggest you to look at the second graph showing the fatal/wounded data pretty much mirrors the incident data.

Many of the comments here reveal a profound ignorance about the actual costs of conducting biomedical research, as well as a lack of knowledge what the Trump administration is doing to knee-cap NIH funding. 1. If you want to have some persp

That's not how indirects are calculated. Assuming the entire award was subject to the 55% indirect rate (not always true), and the total award was $650K, then the direct award amount was about $420K and the indirect amount was ~$230K.

Everything about this sounds highly unusual: 1. Universities do not typically allow graduate students to be PIs on grants. This is for liability reasons. Even for postdocs it would be highly unusual to have full, solo PI status on a grant.

Suppressing journalism seems to be high on the priority list of the new administration. In addition to the examples cited in this article, also from today's news is the example of the White House banning an AP reporter from the oval o

I'm suggesting that a logical question that readers of Hacker News might want to consider when they get excited about a new result in CS, Physics, Biology, etc. is what are the practical circumstances that fostered these results? i.e.

One of the early assignments for an introduction to scientific computing course I teach has a Rickroll link -- I added it as a light-hearted way to see who's actually working through the materials in a detailed way.

Unfortunately our anti-fungal arsenal is not particularly large or all that great. Resistance evolves quickly for most of the commonly used ones; and the ones for which resistance is less easily acquired tend to be highly toxic (key problem

Not true -- my personal account (free basic plan) had this tab/option and I was "opted in" by default. I managed to change this setting before the AI tab disappeared.

Unfortunately few animal gametes are as hardy as those of plants and fungi. In terms of a record of genetic and phenotypic diversity, the global network of natural history museums (at least those with research arms), largely play this role.
