On macOS, I install https://github.com/emreyolcu/discrete-scroll to disable scroll acceleration, because I find it annoying, and macOS has no config option to disable it.

In my experience, it's just some particular syntaxes that vim is slow to process - large XML/HTML files in particular. But just ":synax off" when you want responsiveness more than you want colors :)

Yes, you can pretty easily use "SSH agent forwarding", which grand-parent comment calls "the devil", but really it's not that bad when used selectively, and a lot better than copying the private key to the server.

I used docker inside a vagrant+virtualbox VM running ubuntu, on macOS, for a few years. It's more reliable, and more debuggable, than docker for mac. It's some easy-auto-transparent storage and networking layers that make docker-f

There is lossy compression. There is a rather old codec (SBC) at a few different bit-rates, and a couple newer better codecs from the last 10 years (aptX, AAC, ?). Apple does have the control to make sure better codecs are supported and use

Don't miss the link (in the middle of TFA) to a similar (but simpler) story about the Radeon software suite: https://www.techpowerup.com/274967/psa-amds-graphics-driver-... Both posts ask at the end something like

True, but you would be surprised how little space each driver and feature take. The old and obscure ones are particularly tiny and efficiently implemented by modern standards. For the latest 5.4.z kernel release, the full source tarball, xz

I noticed some years ago that vim can be much slower due to highlighting of particular syntax of huge files. For example it was fine with a 10MiB C file, but super slow with a 10MiB XML file, but fast again with ":syntax off"

KeePass is awkward on macOS and Linux. KeePassX hasn't had a release in 4 years. Thus, KeePassXC ... it's actually pretty good IMHO.

Many C extensions work with PyPy now. I have a service that uses pylibmc and pycurl, and it works with PyPy. Those extensions didn't rewrite with cffi or anything like that, PyPy added a compatibility layer, it's impressive. But,

Signal disallows federation from forks (it has been attempted). "Using signal" requires using the official build, and that requires closed-source libraries and services (e.g. Google Play Services).

I've long avoided "switchable graphics", for this reason. The complexity breeds issues. Be happy with just intel graphics, or go for an AMD/radeon, to improve your chances of not running into bugs/incompatibilities.

For system integration stuff like suspend/resume, display hotplug and resolution changes, etc, the open-source radeon driver is good, and probably the best option on linux. The 3D accel is not bad (but not as good as nvidia). However,
