In what way is windows 10 then the best OS? An OS that keeps breaking by updates is pretty much the worst OS by my standards. At work about 30% of computers have been reinstalled due to windows update failures over a year or so. Pretty awfu

No data cleaning required. That’s often 80% of a project. So 2 months -> 2 weeks makes sense now!

Depends. If the CPU runs at 100% utilization on all cores, I’ve seen battery life drop from 5 to 1 hour (for example).

If used correctly, «this should not happen» can be very useful, indicating e.g that the program is in some illegal state, as opposed to the input being incorrectly formatted.

I’m watching netflix on my chromecast or smart tv. There’s no storage to speak of. I’m guessing that only PCs would be suited for what you’re suggesting, and that very few people watch on PCs.

The same can be seen in the fortran community. The common factor is that both languages are case insensitive. All upper case makes no sense whatsoever.

How do people use pypy? Do you target it from the start of a project, or port existing projects to it?

Fortran has had it since the 90s, but importantly,it has elementwise operations built right into the language. Python does not, but operator overloading allows for a good array library to be implemented (numpy). Many computations contain ot

Afaik Go does not have operator overloading and, hence, will never be popular for numerics, just like java never was (or will be). Python has this flexibility and allows for great numerics libs for this reason.

ag is made to search code specifically. grep is a more general purpose text search tool and better suited (imho) for handling data (in contrast to code). Also, it’s always installed. I’ve never been on a machine with ag unless if I’ve insta

I printed a cheat sheet. The first 1-2 weeks are less productive. After that, it’s «life before and after». Would recommend learning plain vim, just to keep yourself from getting confused from what’s vim and what’s intellij.

Relatedly, the emacs users I’ve met were 10+ years older than me (so far). Also, a huge number of other editors have vim keybindings as an option or plugin: intellij, eclipse, visual studio - the list goes on forever...

Anaconda python contains both pyqt and qt. That’s what we use. Pip contains just the python bits, not the Qt bits - at least this is true for PyQt.

The article argues that you should test larger units (integration tests) rather than unit tests, but also that you should use a statically typed language. This leads to less flexibility and more «ossification» in my experience, much like th

AFAIR there was a story stating that the windows team is now part of azure and some other project, no longer having its own team. Apt is so different from homebrew that I don’t think they’re worth comparing directly. Fwiw people run homebre

Then some user will copy a directory, check it in, and declare that s/he «has branched the code». Oh, and quietly pull in some other directory, which is clearly not branched. This is just broken IMHO.

The fact that branching = copied directories is certainly wrong.

What happens if you replace the glibc malloc used in implementations of higher level languages like python/ruby/js? Aren’t these languages big on allocating small objects very often?

Optimizations of the dict class (both memory and cpu wise) in python 3.5+ are pretty important, as it’s used a lot internally. E.g class members and methods are stored in a dict. This basically affects all python code.
