It’s fantastic and should be used by most CLI programs. Argparse is much faster and avoids having a dependency, so it does serve a purpose.

You can always set up a «git fetch» cronjon on your dev laptop/rpi/vps/toaster. I had one on all repos in my ~/git directory to ensure I have up-to-date repos without manual intervention.

True, but all CI systems allow you to run arbitrary shell scripts. This is often the source of e.g. hard-to-debug broken builds, because you can’t necessarily run the bits locally, or at least it’s inconvenient.

There’s already the %%bash cell magic, which does that for bash.

Parquet’s snappy and brotli compressors are quite ok. Not sure if blosc is even faster though.

What we did for our old tv, was to get a chromecast after 3-4 years. This might be a cheaper and more environmentally friendly approach than yours, as we then buy one «smart-device», but you might end up with 2, over 12 years. But then some

DB noob question: if you know that you should be indexing on a json attribute, can’t you put it into a «proper column» and index there?

Not all plastic does. E.g POM, used in car parts and other durable products. Mass density ~1.4x water. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyoxymethylene?wprov=sfti1

I did that years ago. The only downside is that every 2-3 years some email gets stuck in gmail’s spam folder.

You can chew through TB even without distributed, as long as you have the disks and cores on the same system.

What’s «large»? I’ve set up multi-TB analyses without issue, using dask. I don’t know of a more productive language for such analyses, either. What is even better?

Also for tab completion of directories to rsync on the remote. Otherwise you’d have to type your password on every <tab>. You can use ssh keys and agents to achieve the same, but it’s much slower, and harder to set up IMO.

Xonsh lets you log history to a sqlite database. It’s a nifty feature for analysing what you’re doing in your shell and AFAIK it keeps the start/stop/elapsed time too.

I third this. And push your most convenient aliases and git hooks or whatever to github. It’s not much work to symlink, git clone, ansible them, or whatever works for you.

Since python3 has many more users than python2 this is not a relevant comparison. It was not smooth, but now it’s done and it worked. There have been many C++ forks which have failed to replace it, e.g D, Rust, ...

Interesting. How do you enable «trace-level» logging without writing «log.trace(...)» absolutely everywhere in your code? And what about performance? For context, I mostly program in python. I could imagine compile-time loglevel settings co
