I don't know, that seems bad just in a different way. Maybe if IEEE hosted those documents themselves it would make sense to link to them but even then the copyright notice on the draft looks pretty onerous.

Getting a good sense of a person is really difficult, especially through something as contrived as these technical interviews. And any company that sees enough applicants that they can afford it will err on the side of rejecting candidates

Nice work. I really like the simplicity of it. The best strategy I've been able to come up with grows the exponent roughly every 50s: 47s to get to 100, 51s to 1415, and so on. I wonder if there's a way to do it faster.

What's the algorithm for mapping between locations and names? If I wanted to integrate this into my own code how would I do that -- is there a library? Coincidentally I published a post about almost exactly the same thing only a few ho

I did give Hilbert curves a try at one point, what made me go with z-order instead is that there's an elegant way to convert between coordinates and z-order quads (which I'll describe in a later post) and I couldn't find some

Given a value how do you determine the granularity? How do you tell whether a leading 00 indicates a lower resolution quad or a higher resolution one in the 0th corner?

Thanks for the pointer to d-ary heaps, there's some overlap there. You're right -- I simply wasn't aware of how those work.

Thanks for the link. I was familiar with google's system from when I worked there but couldn't find a good description of it so I assumed it was purely internal.

I'd be worried it would play out something like this: "We're not saying you have to lie, just that you can't tell anyone about this. Whatever dead man's switch you've set up for yourself is none of our concern.
