"We have had a legion of volunteers... who review uploads in exchange for in-site rewards, as well as the health of the community." ...or in exchange to see the stuff they can't get to see anywhere else? I wonder for how many

Google and Facebook do not sell peoples data. They sell their eyeballs. That‘s where money is to be made.

You restaurant analogy fails, because restaurants are at a fixed physical location and the seats are constrained. I find Ben Thompson's "Aggregation Theory" quite insightful on this topic: https://stratechery.com&#

This. It's a bit baffling to me that even the HN audience doesn't come to this conclusion immediately - maybe people want to assume the worst because it's Facebook?

I came here to write that exact comment. If I don't trust my computer to not be infected, I should not use it at all. Having someone watch me picking my nose is far less privacy-invading than someone accessing my photo library for exam

That's not really implied. I'm also on Whatsapp (to communicate with Android users) but I agree with every word in that comment.

Might also be that newer versions of macOS need more RAM than Snow Leopard and therefore less is available for filesystem caches.

This is overblown, isn't it? That thing can't do anything that a public wifi couldn't, and yet everyone connects their laptops to those without hassle. SSL is nearly everywhere now...

Again, this is not Apple using his work in their own software. This is Apple providing the downloadable source code (because a workflow inside Shortcuts is exactly that) to a program that accesses an image URL from his site. Most people c

Apple did not create this. It originates in the "Workflow Gallery", which Apple rebranded when taking over the service. I think the question is: Are these downloadable workflows an integral part of the Apple software or are they j

The more I think about this topic, the more I come to the conclusion there is one simple solution to all the targeted-ad related problems - at least from the platforms point of view: Make all data about ads public. Who is targeted, how many

This is really critical. ImageMagick's convert uses Ghostscript by default if it detects PDF content, so there are lots of webapps vulnerable now. Is some cases, uploading a test.jpeg with the following text content might be sufficient

I usually do this by hand with surprisingly good results: I use calibre to convert the ePub to txt and then fix some common problems (i.e. remove line breaks and page numbers) using regular expressions. Then I convert it to an audio file us

Did you check and compile every line of code that runs on your phone? If not, than that's also smoke and mirrors. I guess it's easier to get evil patches into any open source component on a "free" phone than to get them

No, it does not if the Wifi Chipset is disabled, because it uses wifi for location services (GPS would use way too much battery). That's exactly the problem: The wifi chipset is used for much more than just connecting to the internet.
