Stockfish 5 was released yesterday: http://stockfishchess.org/ As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, Stockfish is just an engine - you must install a GUI separately. XBoard is well known, but there are better alternatives

I'd like to learn Clojure. Any suggestions on how to get started? It's my first time using a Lisp dialect. I figured I'd tackle the Clojure Koans, and mix in a few Project Euler problems. I'd also like to do some code

I think even that part is mostly wrong. The author confuses project and engineering managers, but more importantly, this notion that Larry wanted to fire all of them is just not true. The managers all had technical backgrounds (CS degrees

Early Googler here. It's funny how often the story of the mass-firing is misreported. This article gets two basic facts wrong: 1) Larry was targeting engineering management, not project management. 2) Nobody was fired. The engineeri

Try 'Scid vs PC' or ChessX. You'll get a good-looking GUI, plus some cool database features. http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net/ http://chessx.sourceforge.net/ A cool feature people may not kno

The Stockfish team has made tremendous progress recently, thanks to 1) putting the code on Github and accepting patches, and 2) building an open, distributed testing framework that tests every patch by playing thousands of games. http:

Stockfish (ranked #2 on the various computer rating lists) runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, Android. It's also free and open source! http://stockfishchess.org/ https://github.com/mcostalba/Stockfish

Agree 100%. In this regard, Carlsen's playing style reminds me of Bobby Fischer, who was legendary for playing on (and winning) from equal positions.

The "Bulgarian cheater" he's referring to is Borislav Ivanov ( http://en.chessbase.com/tagged?tag=Cheating ). The evidence against him is overwhelming, especially this statistical analysis of Ivanov's gam

I've lived for several years in Silicon Valley and Austin, and would have to agree that Austin has more attractive young women. The University of Texas probably has a lot do with it. It also helps that that Austin has 10-11 months of warm

Please don't let stories like this discourage you from playing tournament chess. There are tens of thousands of tournaments each year, and typically just 1 or 2 incidents of cheating. There will always be some element of cheating in any c

You're criticizing TIOBE, but the article is about PYPL, which uses a slightly different methodology (counting searches instead of results).

Same problem here. My monthly data usage increased by 10x after I upgraded to iOS 6.0. It's annoying that there's (apparently?) no mention of this issue in the 6.0.1 release notes.

Austin's certainly not as lush and beautiful as Northern California, but it's definitely not "dreary and worn looking". Yes, it gets very hot in the summer, but the rest of the year the weather is fantastic.

Only WoW and Minecraft, and I never noticed any additional fan noise (although I doubt the GPU was maxed-out). In any case, I'd expect a game's sound effects and background music to be MUCH louder than any fan noise...

My Fall 2009 iMac is virtually silent, even with all 4 cores fully loaded. Sometimes, late at night, when the house is very quiet, I'll notice some fan noise, but it's very soft - nothing at all like the MacBook Pro (which I also own)

The iMac screen is highly reflective, to the point that it's almost like looking in a mirror when running an app with a dark background color. My default IDE background color is black, and I had to change it on my iMac, so I could focus on

Here are a few enormously successful (and highly complex) products that you missed: 1-2) AdWords and AdSense revolutionized web advertising. Those two products generated $6.5 billion in revenue just in Q1 of 2010. 3) Android. Others have

Yep. Even if Topalov missed 34...Qe8!, he should have seen how dangerous it was to open the diagonal for the bishop and walk his king to h3. Maybe he thought he could outplay Anand in a complicated position, but Vishy was more than up to

You're correct. The branching factor in a typical chess middlegame is 35-36, but top players usually only consider 1-3 moves per position. This is why the best humans were able to beat computers at chess for such a long time. (In the las

I agree that the title is misleading. But keep in mind that every player who has ever been ranked #1 (Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik, Topalov, Anand) has gone on to become World Champion. It's just a matter of time before Carlsen gets
