So I'm only a Rust amateur (I mean I don't get paid to use it), but I'm on my third round trying to build something with it, and I feel like I'm finally starting to get it. A couple warts I've encountered: - No supp

I have 10+ years of experience---17 actually, or more depending on how you count. I am sitting out the hiring market: instead I'm doing consulting, freelancing, and my own projects. The problem isn't a shortage of 10+ year develop

This looks like a lot of fun! Using a RaspPi is really attractive to me because you can make everything interoperate, and nothing depends on some company's servers. I've done two Pi projects now that I keep meaning to blog about.

One of my in-laws is a geologist who works for the oil companies, and he tells me in that industry almost all the big executives are engineers. Since he's been in the news, take Rex Tillerson. His degree is in engineering. Or take any

This is how I think of FileMaker Pro. It seems like a great "next step" past Excel for businesses that don't have budget/time for custom programming. Also, what about SharePoint? I haven't used it, but my impression

I agree that Russell's book is good, although Will Durant's Story of Philosophy is even better. :-) Of course there's no reason you can't read both. If you want to read some ancient philosophy directly, Plato's S

Wow, the clipboard is really a thought-provoking comparison. I'm not sure if many people are quite aware of what you said, unless they've done desktop programming: when an application puts something on the clipboard, it can put mu

I agree about it being huge. But from an employer perspective, even if it's not huge, what counts is the margin, and if it gives you a few more good candidates than everyone else trying to hire, that is a big advantage. All the things

Certainly. Especially right now, you need to attract candidates who are "passively looking": people who have a job, but would move given a good offer. I do freelance development and consulting, and I'm basically happy with th

Angle of Repose is amazing. Crossing to Safety is really good too, although not about the West. I still haven't gotten to Big Rock Candy Mountain , although I think he might be best known for it.

Just the other week I finished reading Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs by Wallace Stegner (whose novels are wonderful by the way), and in several of the essays collected there he writes about how the defining characterist

I would like to see a SPA persistence framework that is based on the Command pattern, so that it can give you an automatically-generated backend, Operational Transformation-based collaboration, offline functionality, and undo/redo.

I discovered Thoreau in 9th grade and responded much as the author describes. I loved the clarity, the independence, the disdain for the crowd, the longing for nature, and the commitment to a moral, self-examined life. I think his message o

I agree with this in principle, and I feel the same way about Rails (also heavily convention-over-configuration). But do you also dasherize the JSON keys in your server back-and-forth, as recommended by JSONAPI? That strikes me as such a st

It is interesting to read that so little has changed since the days of Caesar. Reading his Gallic War you'd think the war was won by digging ditches and building walls. For instance, search for "fortification" on this page:
