It's solid marketing regardless. I've heard of WoG before, but used this opportunity to buy a copy...for more than $1.

We added code at least a year ago to prevent people from building gems with the name of a gem already hosted on rubyforge. That being said, the rubygem library itself really needs some type of namespacing solution to solve the problem once

I'll venture a guess you've never heard of the git hosts that only offer private plans. Allowing people to post public code for free is fundamental to our business model and a major reason why we're successful.

We (GitHub) were DDoS'd the other week when members of an open source project hosted on the site got upset at the other members and wanted to make the entire ecosystem around the project suffer. Not saying that's what happened to BitBucket,

You're correct that Rackspace is more expensive than our current arrangement with Engine Yard, but it would have been quite the opposite had we elected to stay.

I love the clever quips over at Reddit as much as the next guy, but I've come to enjoy HN's higher level of expectation out of its responses. Just because people are modding you up, doesn't mean you shouldn't try to uphold that standard.

Trying to make that sort of money using something like an Adsense program is going to take a hell of a lot more pageviews over having a sales force capable of selling high-dollar ad packages. That isn't to say that sites like PlentyofFish h
