The last few days we were hit with a couple of issues, but prior to that the site was fairly solid for a number of months. There really is no comparison to our uptime on Rackspace compared to what it was on EY. That said, we've hired additi

Smart HTTP support for Git is being released soon. We'll be adding it to GitHub shortly thereafter.

This page hasn't officially launched yet, but we're working on exposing trending repos: http://github.com/explore edit: naturally, 5 minutes after I wrote this we decided to go live with it http://news.ycombinator.com/edit?id=1069047

We use Prawn to generate GitHub's PDF receipts and FI invoices, it's a great library.

Our Mysql boxes were hammered thanks to this bug. Pages that weren't supposed to be crawled because they're resource intensive were all getting hit. Very frustrating, we ended up blocking all msnbot traffic in Nginx.

What about the plans at GitHub seems pricey? (Not trying to be snarky, I'm genuinely curious) edit: what sort of guarantee of privacy are you expecting as well?

"You use the BSD license when you don't care about the commercial value of your code." That sounds almost as ridiculous as someone saying: "You use the GPL license when you want to scare off anyone else interested in using your code." Serio

I heard an interesting story that Yahoo pays LinkedIn lots of money to figure out which of their employees are looking to leave in order to offer incentives to get them to stay. Certainly, employers could do the opposite with that informati

We're certainly familiar with the lengths people will go to achieve accolades on the internet. Don't be surprised if you see more incentives on the site to encourage open source contribution.

I don't think anyone said GitHub is "the one true way". I think you'll find more and more people putting code on GitHub, because of the general uptick in contributions when code is hosted there. (disclosure: I work for GitHub)

We have no reason to sell GitHub, the business is doing very well and we're all having a great time.

I agree, but it's also in our best interest to educate people about Git that show up to GitHub without any prior knowledge. Sounds like we need to do a better job of that.

Do what you love. There, a financially insecure person just told you to do that. If you have to pay the bills then yes, do what it takes, but you should always be striving to work on something that makes you happy.

I don't think there's any particular switch one way or the other. At GitHub, some of use use Textmate, others use vim or emacs, and I think Scott's been using gedit recently. Use whatever the hell makes you happy.

We're aware of the problem and sorry about the annoyance. It's a targeted attack, so normal solutions to prevent this aren't going to work. We'll figure it out, though. edit: the spam listings should be gone within the hour.
