I notice these Mac tools becoming a bit stale. sort is derived GNU sort, but from some ancient version. I guess this might be due in part to these tools now being GPLv3 ?

For a similar but much faster tool than ack, which simply wraps `find` and `grep` in the UNIX tradition, see: http://www.pixelbeat.org/scripts/findrepo

This seems like a bit of a cop out? Why not try a new kernel or separate stack like Fedora for example?

I had this idea to demo basic python concepts. Here's an implementation of ls with links to further info: http://www.pixelbeat.org/talks/python/ls.py.html

I enable this for GNU ls like: alias ls="BLOCK_SIZE=\'1 ls --color=auto" The above is a bit hacky and not very UNIXy as it's lumping more logic into ls, rather than splitting out into functional units. Number formatting being a ver

Cool! Here is an rpm variant with simplified sed: whatis -s1 $(rpm -ql coreutils | sed -n 's,.*/bin/,,p')

Very nice! Note if you put the | at the end of the line the whole command is copy and pasteable. Also you could pipe to `column -t -s:` to align nicely Also you can download the 57K index rather than the 1.3M manual to get the command list.

I prefer the much simpler approach of reusing the existing utils with a simple shell script, which is much faster than ack: http://www.pixelbeat.org/scripts/findrepo A quick test on a moderately big repo: $ time findrepo test '*' |

Yes they're a pain in the ass, but a necessary one. `uname -s` obviously doesn't cater for the divergences and bugs within a platform. Have a look at gnulib for things one has to deal with. BTW, one can just use gnulib and forget about lots

Cool we can have reflinks by default. http://www.pixelbeat.org/docs/unix_links.html Fedora changes seem to go in cycles. F11 and F14 were good stabilization releases. F17 should be of the same ilk I think.
