HN _is_ social media. It is the medium, not the algorithm that encourages the behaviour. Like how a garbage can close to the door is more likely to be used than one on the other side of the room. The people who change their behaviour in tho

Aren’t block sizes (and minimum file size) normally around 4kB? So a max number of 1-byte files would take up around 16 TB, without adding any overhead. Those drives are available these days

You can only incentivize the behaviour you want. It can’t be forced. RTO does do this in a stronger way than fully remote, in second-order ways. Simplistic as it might be, if those are the only tools available, those are the ones that will

What would a platform that incentivizes rational analysis look like? Social media as a whole definitely does not. Social media incentivizes immediacy, hot takes, and strong opinions. The nature of the medium produces that sort of content an

To expand on this a touch, kids are only in school for 6 hours a day. For ages between kindergarten and grade 4 or so, it is generally frowned on to let them make their way home alone. A single parent with no child care cannot be in an offi

I really, strongly believe that if devs were building genuine friendships with their team mates remotely, there would be no RTO. I have only ever seen the opposite: people are distancing from each other more than ever. Aren’t we in a “lonel

“The medium is the message.” People who work remote become that person who doesn’t value their team, because that’s what the environment promotes. We work in companies because of the team and the community though, that is the whole point of

Having it hallucinate a valid url that is spoofing the site I’m looking for feels less likely than someone managing to game SEO. Eclipse is a good example: the first result in Google is eclipseide.org, not eclipse.org.

I listen to a lot of Stuff You Should Know and haven’t noticed. TIL I’m exempt from their targeted ads too!

Life is change. Sometimes that’s worth fighting for and sometimes it’s worth fighting against. Is the current Google worth that battle for you? I’d rather see what comes next.

I’ve started asking ChatGPT to give me the right link. I can’t imagine they won’t start embedding ads too but so far, it’s been pretty clean.

Podcasts are normally plain mp3 (or similar) files that get downloaded as-is off an rss feed, as far as I understand. I don’t think anyone gets extra ads outside the sponsored/host-read ones.

It might not be a government-enforced thing but there isn’t much reason to go to the effort of putting a red metal octagon somewhere if it didn’t mean stop, in some way. The things don’t just fall of trees and land on the side of buildings.

The markets for smaller phones and the larger Pro Max models look like they’re roughly in the same order of magnitude. It doesn’t look like a negligible demand that is not worth serving.

As the article points out, the iPhone 13 mini sold half as much as the other iPhone 13 models, while competing with the iPhone SE which was the same size at half the price. That isn’t exactly terrible.

If the origin of ads is hosting fees, I agree. The internet would a lot more fun if everyone’s side projects persisted forever by default.

I think the way you define ads and social media would be important. We would end up getting something like the cookie banners again instead of real change.

Some of the open models like kimi k2 do a better job of pushing back. It does feel a bit annoying to use them when they don’t just immediately do what you tell them. Sugar-free is a good analogy!

Ruby is a well-sharpened knife. Not everyone should be given a sharp knife though, especially children. And not all jobs need a sharp knife, like buttering toast. So I think it’s good for dull knives to exist as part of your tool belt. If w

One of the ways this electron leak happens (from the chatGPT) is that fuel (NADH) exceeds energy demand (ATP). So a good way to push off the mental need for sleep is to get your body tired. So the processes aren’t quite perpendicular.

Coming from a place of curiosity not knowledge with this. Is it not true that strength roughly matches testosterone levels and that is bimodal in the population? Could what we call women’s sports today not be defined on that axis instead?
