Hopefully we agree here that the most important goal is to understand the entire chain of events (from plant design to construction to operation to earthquake to tsunami to power failure to meltdown to vessel breach), in order to better avo

Yes, this. An accidental defect may not have an incidence, but you can bet the corruption that led to it being covered up does.

But the one next to it has! Do you really think the corrupt construction of one of these structures has no bearing on the failure of the others? That they're independent events in history?

Wait, how is a coverup and botched inspection leading to an unsafe containment vessel unrelated to a situation decades later in which a sister vessel is compromised? EDIT: clarified that the vessel from this story was not the exact one th

This is a nitpick, but the first sentence bothers me. Theoretically, the world shouldn't be divided into time zones at all, but rather one continuous timeline, where local noon is always when the sun is at its highest point. I don't actual

The fact that you're getting advice from people you know rather than strangers and spammers seems like a huge advantage, but I don't think they've nailed the right QA model yet. This seems more awkward and harder to search than something l

I type ~100 wpm with essentially two fingers. I do use my thumb for the spacebar and my middle fingers for ~4 specific edge keys, but otherwise it's all index all the time. I have a hairbrained theory that this has helped me avoid carpal t

Over 500 (or somesuch -- it's a moving target) gets you the ability to downvote. Which raises an interesting point -- badges do nothing for me, but feature unlocking is compelling, as much as I wish it weren't. I don't actually care, but

Interesting, but this isn't true for any of the major US carriers (e.g, UA/CO, AA, DL), so I don't think it undermines his presentation.

I believe the comment above was meant as a response to the "The response to the bug report looks depressingly typical" comment elsewhere in this thread. It took me a minute to sort that out ("hmm, why is he referencing Bruce Evans?"), so I

My only wish is that you could blacklist (or whitelist) people from whom you recieve notifications, rather than have to disable the feature entirely. Otherwise this may turn into an extremely effective way to spam high-value developers.

Not sure if this was the OP's intent, but doesn't "a place where people can learn by being given some random topics" basically describe sites like Hacker News? Edit: Just noticed that the OP is the post's actual author, so I assume this wa

I had the same two reactions to the ad: (1) no way that's going to work (i.e., not look like crap) on airport wifi; and (2) what in the world does watching streaming TV on your laptop in an airport have to do with cloud computing?

My point is that you or your child getting thyroid cancer, even if you or she recovers, is a pretty horrific outcome, and might deserve to be considered somehow -- not just fatalities.

The thousands of children (now adults) near Chernobyl with thyroid cancer don't show up in these stats, since they're not all dead. Doesn't necessarily change the conclusions but worth noting.
